How to unlock three hidden themes in Clear, the new iOS task app

Clear, which is a task-managing app for the iPhone, launched and almost instantly became No. 1 in the App Store.

The rich UI, mixed sound effects, and a long list of usable gestures, make for a unique experience on your iPhone. There really isn't another app out there like it.

In the settings for the app you will find themes, five in total. One thing you may not know is that there are actually three (that I can find/know of) themes that can be unlocked by the user in the app itself. Here is what each of them … Read more

Browser theme creator Brand Thunder acquires rival

Fancy a Shakira-themed browser?

As of today, you can get it from Brand Thunder, a company that creates themes to let people reskin their browsers to declare allegiance to bands, colleges, sports teams, and more. That's because Brand Thunder just acquired its biggest rival, BrowserNation.

The acquisition means Brand Thunder has 25 percent more brands to tout, the company said today, giving it more clients in Europe and Asia and giving it a foothold in Latin America. Among its new clients are EMI, UMG Latin, and Epic Records.

"Given the changes in the once-stable browser market, it makes … Read more

Theme Clock 7's analog clock is visible across a crowded room

Style 7's Theme Clock-7 is a free screensaver that displays an excellent representation of the good-old analog wall clock that has served so many classrooms, waiting rooms, and hallways for so long. It has second-hand settings, a date display, and a text feature, but few other options. Its appeal is its standardized, black-and-white, old-school look, a masterpiece of industrial design that has never been bettered. It's familiar to nearly everyone who can tell time by a clock face, and those who can't can use it to learn how. It's clearly visible across most rooms on most … Read more

Expect frustration from Folder Background Changer

Call us old-fashioned, but we don't typically get into desktop customizations. We're not opposed to tweaks that are useful--or even just plain fun--but it seems that much of the time these programs are more trouble than they're worth. So it goes with Folder Background Changer. This program promises to let users customize the background images within their folders, but it doesn't work reliably.

The program required a registration code during installation, which confused us until we realized that it was contained in a text file that came with the download. Once we had the program installed, … Read more

Angry Birds theme park game may not anger Rovio

It looks like Angry Birds developer Rovio is thinking, "If you can't beat 'em (by firing one of those toucan-beaked boomerang birds at them in court), join 'em.

It's not a big scoop that Angry Birds is already an international phenomenon complete with multiple sequels and lots of merchandise.

When reports circulated that the Window of the World theme game in Changsha, China, launched a real-life version of the game this month, legal action from Rovio seemed inevitable.

However, rather than sending an exploding black ball of feathers into Beijing, Rovio is reportedly looking to partner with the theme park to make the attraction legal--as long as everyone involved can get their beaks wet. … Read more

Colorful desktops

Windows7Theme offers a variety of free themes and desktop backgrounds for Windows 7 in self-installing theme packs. The high-resolution images are presented in a wide-screen format (1,920x1,200 pixels) and can be scaled, shuffled, and selected via the standard Windows Personalization page. We took a look at Windows 7 Colorful Theme, which emphasizes vivid colors.

As with other theme packs we've tried, the download unpacked and installed automatically, replacing our previous wallpaper with the first image in the series, an abstract image of pastel layers that strongly suggested lemon and raspberry sherbet (a good start, by the way). … Read more

Desktop thunder and lightning

Lightning Windows 7 Theme is nothing to be scared of, unless dramatic pictures of high-energy lightning strikes accompanied by the occasional rumble of thunder rattles you. It's just a free desktop theme pack that rotates a series of intense high-resolution lightning photos with thunderclap sound effects.

This theme's installer automatically replaced our wallpaper with the Lightning Windows 7 slideshow, announcing the change with a realistic roll of thunder that won't trash your speakers. The first image depicted a dramatic city skyline lit by forks of lightning. We right-clicked the desktop, selected Personalize, and then clicked Desktop Background … Read more

'Toy Story 3' desktop theme

Toy Story 3 Windows 7 Theme is a free theme pack with high-resolution images from the movie "Toy Story 3" as well as sounds. However, we were unable to hear the sounds on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 installations.

Like other free themes from Windows7Theme.net, Toy Story 3 Windows 7 Theme installs automatically when you decompress its download. We minimized our browser window and were pleased to see Woody's smiling face. The 10 still images from the movie are indeed very high-quality HD images in wide-screen format (1,920x1,200-pixel resolution). We opened the Windows … Read more

Microsoft beefs up Office Web Apps

Microsoft tweaked its Office Web Apps earlier this week with a few enhancements designed to make Excel and PowerPoint a bit more user friendly.

Excel aficionados can now insert, delete, and rename individual worksheets in a workbook, just like you can in the desktop version. To do this, open your Excel file in the online editor. Then simply right-click on a tab for an existing worksheet. You'll see the three familiar options to Insert, Delete, or Rename. Inserting adds a new worksheet in front of your current selection. Deleting asking for your confirmation to permanently get rid of the … Read more
