What is FLAC? The high-def MP3 explained

In the late 1990s, one of the original portable music file formats -- the MP3 -- was causing quite a bit of bother. It had earned itself a reputation as a pirate format, and this was mainly due to the sharing site Napster, which was at the height of its notoriety. While MP3 inevitably prevailed, there is a much better choice for high-quality music, and it's gaining in popularity.

FLAC is a musical file format that offers bit-perfect copies of CDs at half the size, and is compatible with many phones (including the iPhone -- with an app), MP3 … Read more

Chat app used by activists has security flaws, say critics

Several bloggers allege that the WhatsApp mobile chat program has weak security that puts users, which include human-rights activists, at risk.

In a series of posts on blogs and public Web pages, security and mobile researchers have been piling on the criticism of WhatsApp. Unfortunately, representatives of WhatsApp have not commented on the recent allegations, though criticism cropped up in May and even last year. WhatsApp did not respond to an e-mail from CNET seeking comment today. The company is unlisted in the San Francisco phone directory. We will update this post if we hear back.

Send unlimited text

WhatsApp Messenger claims it's the easiest way to keep your contacts closer across all smartphone platforms. It does take only a few seconds and 99 cents to get it set up, and then you are ready to send unlimited text messages, photos, audio notes, and video content to your favorite contacts just by using your Internet connection.

The app has pretty good Yahoo Messenger-ish characteristics, as implied by its name, but the thing we liked best was how it handles messages. WhatsApp Messenger uses push notifications to deliver the messages your friends have sent to you, keeping you up-to-date.… Read more

What will the next iPhone be called?

When Apple released the latest iPad earlier this year, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said that naming the device iPad 3 would have been so predictable. "We've had many products where we've never used numbers," Schiller said. "Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't."

Some people don't care what the next iPhone will be called, but some people do. If you're in the latter camp, the big question is whether Apple will follow the more predictable route and go with iPhone 5, the name just about everybody has been calling the upcoming device, or once again throw us a curve.… Read more

Awkward Facebook status updates in the public spotlight

Callum Haywood, an 18-year-old developer from England, is making waves in the Facebook privacy waters. His recently launched site, We Know What You're Doing, culls embarrassing status updates and catalogs them for the world to see.

We Know What You're Doing shakes out into four categories in the form of questions: Who wants to get fired? Who's hungover? Who's taking drugs? Who's got a new phone number?

All it takes to land in the spotlight is a fitting keyword and a failure to have your Facebook privacy settings locked down. Haywood pulls all the updates directly from Facebook's Graph API. For modesty's sake, all the new phone numbers given out over public updates are partially obscured.… Read more
