Spread Christmas cheer with Angry Birds

Everyone's favorite finch-flinging frolic is going festive for both iOS and Android devices (just try saying that five times fast after downing a glass of egg nog).

Rovio Mobile's next big update for Angry Birds, which celebrates Christmas, has been hinted at, detailed, and screenshotted, and now the company has made it official, though we don't have an exact release date yet.

Angry Birds Christmas will be free if you purchased the 99-cent Angry Birds Halloween edition for iOS devices. Rovio had initially tweeted that the Christmas title would only be coming to the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad, but today posted a message that it's flying onto Android too.

Now we're just waiting to hear if Angry Birds fans with MeeGo, WebOS, and Symbian devices will see their Yuletide cheer turn into jeer this holiday. … Read more

Angry Birds slingshotting to PS3, XBox 360, Wii

Angry Birds on the big screen? No, a movie deal hasn't been inked yet, but console versions are in the works. According to a BBC blog, Rovio, the developer of the megapopular smartphone game, is hoping to release Angry Birds on the PS3, XBox 360, and Wii next year.

Also in the works: Angry Birds 2. The new game will apparently have more pigs--and they'll be more active.

"It won't be a sequel or a prequel but a different type of game featuring the same characters," said Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka. "The pigs will … Read more

Nokia Ovi Store hits 3 million daily downloads

Nokia's Ovi Store has officially hit 3 million downloads per day.

The Finnish mobile phone maker attributed the new milestone to higher global demand for its apps and new smartphones sporting the more user-friendly Symbian 3 operating system.

In late September, Nokia began shipping its N8 smartphone, its first to run under Symbian 3, followed a couple of weeks later by the second Symbian 3 phone, the C7. The new version of Symbian has brought with it a greater variety of new apps in the Ovi Store.

Nokia has also been working hard to lure in more developers. In … Read more

Angry Birds spotlights Android fragmentation

The good news for Android is that it's flexible enough to reach many corners of the smartphone market. The bad news is that this can mean headaches for programmers--as the top-ranked game Angry Birds illustrated today.

Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile has announced that it's going to create a second version of its flagship game for lower-end Android devices after finding "severe performance issues."

"With our latest update, we worked hard to bring Angry Birds to even more Android devices. Despite our efforts, we were unsuccessful in delivering optimal performance," the Angry Birds developer … Read more

Feed Om Nom or suffer the consequences

Cut the Rope is an inventive, addictive, and extremely polished arcade puzzler, in which you interact with increasingly complex, physics-based puzzles to get a piece of candy into the mouth of a cute monster named Om Nom.

Cut the Rope's interface starts out simple: you just swipe your finger to cut a rope, which drops an attached piece of candy into Om Nom's mouth. Soon, you're cutting multiple ropes (occasionally more than one at a time, using multitouch), trying to maneuver the plummeting piece of candy to pass over stars on its way to Om Nom (between … Read more

Crave 22: Smell my moon dust (podcast)

This week on Crave, a low-tech robot makes Donald excited...or sad. No, excited. No, sad. Either way, its bulbous hand is sure to provide minutes of entertainment. Also, we chime in on a high-fashion biking helmet from Sweden and find out what the moon smells like (Eric is disappointed it's not cheese). Plus, an R2-D2 swimsuit falls flat on the sexiness scale, super shimmery batteries catch Jasmine's eye, and a Hello Kitty Smart car brings the rave full circle--as does the iPhone soap that smells like sausage. Or maybe it's the faux-nut from ThisIsWhyYou'reFat that does it. Either way, you're in for a treat (and it might be a pizza pop).
