I've been experimenting with Amazon's new CloudFront CDN service since the launch and thus far it's proven to be a good option provided you don't need to update content in anywhere near real-time (you are pretty much looking at 24 hours before content updates hit the full network.)
And while the functionality doesn't match something like Akamai, my best math effort suggests that the service will cost you 10% (or less) than Akamai does for static image serving, which makes the service very compelling.
Amazon has announced Amazon app for the iPhone and iPod Touch which was released this week and it is free (iTunes link). The app allows iPhone users to shop for merchandise on Amazon's popular website. Users can access wish lists, shopping carts, one-click shopping, plus all the customer reviews and ratings that might help buyers make decisions on what to buy, etc.
It also introduces a very nice new feature called "Amazon Remembers" which according to their press release:
"Amazon Remembers helps customers keep track of items they see in their daily lives and even tries … Read more
eMusic users awoke Friday to a redesign of the subscription-based download site, which specializes in music from independent artists. The main feature is a recommendation engine provided by MediaUnbound, which uses a combination of computer algorithms and real live music fans to duplicate the services of that one friend of yours who always seems to know about the new bands first. MediaUnbound CEO Michael Papish had this funny exchange with TechCrunch in which he explained why his company's technology is better than Pandora and other recommendation engines, although the TechCrunch reviewer remained unconvinced.
It sounds intriguing, and I'm … Read more

The journey is over for Pirates of the Amazon, a new Firefox extension that let users illegally download movies, games, TV shows, and MP3s for free by cross referencing Amazon.com's product pages with torrent files from the Pirate Bay.
On Thursday, a day after Webware reported on the plug-in, lawyers for Amazon.com took action. They served the Internet service provider of the two students who released the extension with a take-down notice--and the students complied and removed the tool, according to The New York Times.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal this week, Amazon.com's e-book reader, the Kindle, is out of stock.
The Journal credits Oprah Winfrey, who recommended the Kindle on her show in October.
I saw this effect myself in the page views for old blog posts here--the daily view count for some of my old Kindle posts, especially my comparison of the Kindle with Sony's Reader, spiked the very next day, and it remains higher today than it was before that show aired.

After getting bad news about the death of this year's CNET holiday party, we wallow in sorrow for awhile but count our blessings that our two week vacation is still in tact. We move on to congratulate Logitech on their 1 billionth mouse and recommend a few of our favorite peripherals. We also wag a finger at Canada and unleash a horror story about their massacre of our beloved Sea Unicorn, the Narwhal. Shame on you, we thought you were better than us!
There are two very large problems that are tackled in today's episode. First one is … Read more
A new Firefox extension called Pirates of the Amazon lets users download movies, games, TV shows, and MP3s free of charge by cross referencing Amazon's product pages with torrent files from the Pirate Bay.
If the content can be found on the Pirate Bay's search index it shows up as a "Download 4 Free" link on the top of the Amazon product page. This links directly to the hosted .torrent tracker file, letting the user avoid having to make a purchase from Amazon in place of acquiring it illegally via BitTorrent.
The extension developer's site, … Read more
