During last week's review of the second-generation iPod Touch I uncovered something interesting: the new Touch hardware supports recording input through its headphone jack, but there's no software to take advantage of it. It seems odd, but Apple representatives confirmed the details with me by phone. Existing iPhone voice-recording applications aren't yet compatible with the iPod Touch 2G, and Apple hasn't developed their own voice recording application for the Touch, like they have with the 2G Classic and 4G Nano.

Apple on Friday issued an update for iTunes 8 that specifically addresses problems experienced by Windows Vista users, and issued general recommendations for Windows XP and Vista users experiencing sync issues with iPhone and iPod touch devices.

Since its release earlier in the week, iTunes 8 has bedeviled some Windows Vista users with the so-called blue screen of death, or BSOD, and other issues. Speculation has focused on an incompatibility with USB devices, such as Webcams and printers.

Remember when the first-generation iPod Touch came out last year? The poor thing only had 11 Apps, couldn't e-mail, and the advent of movie rentals, games, and the iTunes App store were distant on the horizon. Oh, and 8 gigs would set you back about $300. Slowly, but surely, Apple kept upping the ante by adding more features and offering movie rentals, games, and finally, the App store. Still, the boutique price of the first-gen Touch made it tough to recommend, especially as the up-front price of the iPhone 3G dropped down to $199.

iPod Touch owners are getting an early look at the OS X 2.1 software update promised by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during Tuesday's music event.

Several blogs noted that the software update went live yesterday, but that appears to have been a premature release that was finalized this morning. The new software is supposed to fix a slew of bugs in the 2.0 software, such as frequent application crashes and backups that keep going, and going, and going.

I guess I can see it being useful when I forget to turn off the oven, but I'd prefer to get the news by driving up to a burning apartment rather than getting a text from my oven that says "Hey, dummy--you forgot to turn me off, so now I'm spitting hot fire at all your physical possessions. See you at home!" No thanks, gas company, you can keep the service--I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
