iPhone battery test results

Immediately after we posted our Apple iPhone review, Senior Editor Donald Bell and I handed our iPhone off to CNET Labs for battery drain tests. And now we can report that our first results are in. Just to remind you, the iPhone has a rated battery life of 8 hours talk time, 24 hours of music playback, 7 hours of video playback, and 6 hours of Internet use.

Talk time: When we tested the iPhone with the Wi-Fi function turned off, we got about 7 hours, 20 minutes of talk time. When we tested it with the Wi-Fi activated, we … Read more

AT&T offers DSL subscribers free Wi-Fi

AT&T DSL subscribers can now get free access to its Wi-Fi hot spots throughout the country.

Subscribers of services that offer download speeds of 3 megabits per second or higher will get access to any of its 10,000 hot spots in airports, coffee shops, McDonald's restaurants and Barnes & Noble bookstores for free, the company said Monday.

Subscribers of AT&T's lower tier service can pay $1.99 for unlimited Wi-Fi access. Non-AT&T subscribers pay $7.99 per day for Wi-Fi access in these public hot spots.

Adding Wi-Fi as part of … Read more

AT&T iPhone activation contractor: "Extremely pleased" with results

Synchronoss, the New Jersey-based company that has a contract with AT&T to handle iPhone activations, says it is "extremely pleased" with the way the iPhone activations went.

In an earlier post I described how I spent innumerable hours on hold over the weekend trying to get AT&T to actually activate the iPhone I bought on Friday evening. They finally did on Sunday, after 39 hours elapsed.

That brings us to Synchronoss, which has a contract with AT&T to handle the activation.

Publicly traded Synchronoss, oddly, hasn't been very public about its … Read more

iPhone activated: It took AT&T only 39 hours

The good news is that my iPhone is finally activated and it's definitely worth the money.

The bad news is that it took AT&T 39 hours to get it done.

I've documented the problems step-by-step, including the magic (and not-so-magic) numbers I called, in this post. Here's our review from my colleagues at CNET Reviews.

It's not just me. An unscientific poll shows half of the respondents who bought iPhones had activation problems, blogger Thomas Hawk has recounted his similar woes, and there's a Slashdot thread too. And check out Apple's own discussion forum. … Read more

Tough to find instant iPhone gratification at AT&T stores

Those iPhone hopefuls who had planned to avoid long lines at Apple stores by visiting AT&T stores had to get lucky to secure one yesterday, and replacements might not arrive for weeks.

Launch day for the iPhone went very smoothly at Apple's retail stores. Plenty of units were available and long lines of customers were moved swiftly in and out of the store. But 12 of 15 AT&T stores surveyed Saturday sold out of their allotments on Friday night, which ranged from 30 units to 90 units. Only one store in Chicago still had 4GB … Read more

Big iPhone headache: Waiting for AT&T activation

So I admit it: I bought an iPhone.

That was the easy part. I should have realized that if the customer service whizzes at AT&T could find a way to mar what was otherwise a perfectly pleasant experience, they would. After nearly nine hours over 36 hours, AT&T has yet to activate my iPhone, and it can't be used until they get around to it, hopefully sometime before 2010.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Earlier on Friday, I had taken photographs of the throngs gathered outside the San Francisco Apple store at 6 … Read more

Photo gallery: Apple iPhone

There's one thing most people agree about the iPhone: it's one seriously good-looking device. The sleek lines, the cute menu icons, the slim profile--even if you've sworn off the iPhone, there's no denying its sex appeal. We've taken several photos of it from all angles, plus we've captured a few screenshots of the phone's virtual QWERTY keyboard, the Safari Web browser, and the Google Maps interface. Take a look at the iPhone in all its glory.

The iPhone gets ripped apart

Barely a few hours into the launch of the Apple iPhone, and already a few very brave souls have torn apart the $600 phone to reveal its precious innards to all. Both the folks over at Think Secret and iFixit have taken apart the phone, but only the iFixit guys managed to open up the logic board without ruining it (oops!). Judging from their gratuitous shots of the iPhone getting ripped apart, it looks like disassembling the phone was quite a difficult task. From what I can see, it looks like the battery is huge, there are about 16 screws … Read more
