Twitter on the CNET home pages

Over the last few weeks, we released new versions of the CNET and the CNET News home pages. With these redesigns, we are using Twitter as a new way to bring you news.

While many news organizations aggregate their reporters' tweets and display them in dedicated Twitter modules, CNET now folds a curated set of tweets into the listing of latest news, placing tweets on the same level with everything else that CNET publishes.

How it works It is up to the discretion of the reporter to decide which tweets are worthy of your attention. If a reporter deems a … Read more

Flickr's photo page redesign now live for all

Flickr's redesigned homepage, which increased the size of photos as well as moving and highlighting several of the service's features, is now live to all users.

The new look was launched as an opt-in beta back in late June. Back then, Matthew Rothenberg who is Flickr's head of product, told CNET that the plan was to roll it out to everyone after a month of testing. Just a week late on that estimate, the company now says it's been released to 100 percent of users as the default style.

According to a post on Flickr's … Read more

Making the switch to Apple? Get the perfect setup

With the undeniable popularity and success of the iPhone 4 (despite the antenna debacle), iPad, and ever-increasing Mac sales, Apple is gaining customers faster than ever. If you're thinking about making the switch, this could be your perfect setup.

Component one: iPhone 4 Now in its fourth iteration, Apple's iPhone has forever changed the mobile phone landscape by thrusting touch-screen technology to the tips of every tech geek's tongue and every consumer's wish list. Despite its early and somewhat overblown issues, iPhone 4 has had record-setting sales. With the exception of the complaints from a vocal minority regarding its antenna, … Read more

Google updates Maps for Android, adds Yelp-like interface

Business-ratings app Yelp just got a massive dose of competition from a much larger source.

Google updated its Maps for Android (version 4.4) on Monday in the Android Market to make its Place Pages business listings more usable. In doing so, Google's solution for taking business listings mobile resembles Yelp's Android feature set more than it ever has before.

Once you install the update (and in our case, reboot your Android phone), you will see a new Places icon in your list of applications. Tapping the icon pulls up a finger-friendly interface with icons for seven categories … Read more

The 404 627: Where it's only been 5 minutes (podcast)

We tried, I swear we did; we had the sincerest intentions not to talk about Inception again, but all three of us have finally seen the movie and while we're generally happy with the film, it wouldn't be The 404 without Wilson almost ruining the ending for everyone who hasn't seen it yet.

We'll have to find a chicken leg to keep him busy next time. Full disclosure: the first 5 minutes of today's show is about Inception (with a little more during Calls From the Public), but it's definitely SPOILER FREE!

The big … Read more

The 404 626: Where we dream the impoffible (podcast)

A quick announcement prior to today's episode of The 404 Podcast: Good news! After several failed attempts at watching "Inception," we learn today that tickets are indeed still available for purchase. The bad news is that you have to hike out to Hoboken, N.J., to see it.

Jeff caught a showing of it last night, and Wilson joins in as they offer a unique review of the rather confusing film. Jeff even wonders if director Chris Nolan has a firm grasp of the winding plot, and it apparently doesn't help when Ken Watanabe stumbles through … Read more

Free: Serif PagePlus desktop publishing software

It's odd that the need to create newsletters, fliers, brochures, and the like hasn't gone away, but desktop publishing software has. A decade ago,  you had your pick of at least a dozen programs, but now the field is nearly empty.

Sure, you can still buy heavyweight applications such as Adobe PageMaker and QuarkXPress, but they cost a small fortune--$499 and $799, respectively--and they're overkill for most people.

That's why I'm a longtime fan of Serif PagePlus, a terrific desktop-publishing application that's ideal for designing both print and Web-based documents.

The applications … Read more

What Google should learn from Bing's images

I was focusing my attentions on deep World Cup meditation when I heard my phone ring and a scream. Yes, it was a friend of mine appalled at the sight of images beneath the type on Google home page.

"How could they do this?" she screamed. "Do they have no idea? "

Might I point out that my friend has some taste? She dresses like Audrey Hepburn. A kind of Audrey Hipburn, to be precise. And you should see her floral designs. Even if she does steal most of the flowers from roadsides and other people's … Read more

Google.com now ready for custom photos

Google is ready to start letting users customize its famously spartan home page with photos of their own.

The company announced Wednesday afternoon that over the next few days, U.S. visitors to Google.com will be able to drag photos from their computer or a Picasa library onto the home page, giving it a unique background. Users outside the U.S. will get the feature a little bit later as Google gradually rolls it out around the world, said Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience and the keeper of the Google Look, in a blog post.… Read more

Google offered Viacom $592 million for content

Not long after Google acquired YouTube, the search engine offered nearly $600 million in guaranteed revenue if Viacom--the parent company of MTV Networks, Comedy Central, and Paramount Pictures--licensed its TV shows and films to YouTube, records show.

News of Google's offer was revealed in documents released on Friday by a Manhattan federal court and reviewed by CNET. In March 2007, Viacom filed a copyright lawsuit against Google and YouTube and it has become one of the most watched legal disputes in the tech sector.

In a deposition given by Google co-founder Larry Page on October 1, 2009, a Viacom … Read more
