Canon puts three new cameras on its 'A'-list

Canon unveiled today three new budget-priced additions to its PowerShot A-series line of point-and-shoot cameras. Two of the models offer basic shooting for $150 or less, while one packs exposure controls and optical stabilization into a sub-$200 package.

The PowerShot A590 IS stands out as the only new A-series PowerShot camera to include optical image stabilization. The 8-megapixel shooter features a 35mm- to 140mm-equivalent, f/2.6-5.5 4x zoom lens that Canon claims can gain up to three stops with its stabilization system. Like previous high-end A-series Canons, the A590 IS supports additional converter lenses to boost the … Read more

Sony H10 megazoom better by half than H3

The DSC-H10 has a 230,000-pixel 3-inch LCD display, compared to the 115,000-pixel, 2.5-inch version on the DSC-H3 it replaces. Given the lack of an electronic viewfinder, that's a nontrivial enhancement, but pretty much the only one. Expect to see it in mid-April, for $299. Now go read something more interesting.

Sony's new Cyber-shots sense and shoot smiling subjects

Sony has updated its Cyber-shot DSC-W series of digital cameras with the announcement of four new models, the Cyber-shot DSC-W120, W130, W150, and W170. Sitting squarely between the company's budget-priced Cyber-shot S-series and its more upscale, style-minded T-series, these new cameras should appeal to users looking for a colorful, modestly-featured camera between $200 and $300.

All four new cameras feature a handful of new options based around an improved face detection system. According to Sony, these new cameras can now distinguish between adult and child faces, letting you decide whether the camera will base its auto-focus and auto-exposure on … Read more

Hot deal: Canon PowerShot SD1000 Elph for $170

As a back-pocket backup, the Elph series is well respected and widely enjoyed. Canon left off the manual controls on this snapshooters' favorite, but for what it is, it's a sound product and a great deal. It started out on the market earlier this year at $220 or higher, and sellers are starting to lower the price. On Thursday, Amazon's winning the race to the bottom, especially since in most cases they offer free shipping for this item.

According to CNET Reviews, the SD1000 Elph offers unusually good image quality, "solid build quality, speedy performance, an optical … Read more

Apple, Sony photos: Coincidence?

An excellent item last month comparing the desktop designs of Apple and Sony by our colleague Matthew Elliott drew some of the most reader comments seen on Crave in months. We won't wade into that territory again but wanted to pass along this item from Engadget Japanese to show that we're hardly the only ones to draw parallels between the two companies.

Engadget says the photos are "official, un-doctored press shots from both Apple and Sony" of an older iPod Nano and the new Sony Cyber-shot released yesterday, respectively. Even the colors and position of the … Read more

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2: Memory cards? Who needs memory cards?

Sony's newest member of the stylish Cyber-shot T-series line beckons you to leave the memory cards at home. The company just announced the Cyber-shot DSC-T2, an 8-megapixel camera with a whopping 4 gigabytes of internal memory. That's about 1,300 full-resolution photos without any external memory. Of course, if you need more space, the camera accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo cards as well.

To organize, view, and share all these pictures, the T2 features Sony's PMB Portable software to help automate the process uploading videos and pictures to commonly used media sharing sites. If you want to … Read more

Screenshot apps that'll capture your attention

Most software categories have their share of free and commercial, good and bad samplings. Screen capture applications, which are more powerful and specific than a PC's native Print Screen function, and which seem like they should be straightforward, are also a varied bunch.

I captured every pixel of my display a few times over while testing four screenshot products--FullShot, SnagIt, Gadwin PrintScreen, and ScreenHunter Free. Because we evaluators just love criteria, I looked at image quality, editing features, and ease of access--the quickest, most natural way to get from screen to a shareable image.
