Hack Days spawn new Yahoo travel, shopping features

Yahoo may be outwardly struggling to redefine itself after being eclipsed by Google in search and online ads, but internally the coding and innovation continues apace, according to Bradley Horowitz, vice president of Yahoo's advanced development division.

"We have a very healthy hack program and that spirit has continued even as the company is rethinking its place in the universe and all those metaphysical questions," he said, referring to the promotion of co-founder Jerry Yang to chief executive, replacing Terry Semel, and Yang's promise to review the company's strategy and direction.

Yahoo partnering with Woot for new daily deals site

In the past couple of years Woot.com has grown from a five-days-a-week deals site to a veritable three-store conglomerate that features a new deal every day, and a wine and T-shirt spinoffs. Today they announced their partnership with Yahoo, as part of Yahoo Shopping for a new co-branded site called Sellout.Woot. The site will serve up a completely different offering than the standard Woot store, and carry with it a small amount of Yahoo branding.

The only way to access the site is via Yahoo Shopping's front page, in what Yahoo is calling the "Deal of … Read more

What is news to John Q. Public?

In this day and age you, the so-called "users" of the Internet, wield so much power. You have seriously damaged the print industry by canceling your newspaper subscriptions in favor of Yahoo News and YouTube. And you are even put in charge of deciding what is newsworthy online at user-driven content sites like Delicious, Digg and Reddit.

But what is your editorial judgment and how does it differ from the experienced, veteran editors who previously had control over what stories were published?

The Project for Excellence in Journalism, formerly affiliated with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, … Read more

Plan trips and find things to do with TripCart

For vacationers in the United States, time off is serious business. Most folks only get two weeks of playtime, and planning what to do and where to do it can be a serious pain. TripCart is a do-it-yourself trip-planning service that's a cross between Yelp and AAA's TripTik service. The site employs a mix of Google Maps, and local attraction ratings--user and editor generated--to let you browse and find interesting things to do. Instead of slurping in content from other services (similar to what Yahoo Local has done with Yelp), the reviews and ratings are site-specific.

Fox, Yahoo lead ComScore August figures

ComScore has released its figures for top Web sites in the United States in August, and UBS analyst Benjamin Schachter has analyzed them. Acknowledging that the data "may be unreliable in many cases," the report says: "We are generally cautious on reading too much into month-to-month data points. However, the data can be useful to analyze long-term trends."

Basically, Fox leads when it comes to measuring page views, and Yahoo does when it comes to unique visitors.

A separate report from JMP Securities on ComScore's global figures notes that Yahoo's global traffic and usage … Read more

Yahoo's Right Media had Trojans in banner ads

For several weeks starting in early August, visitors to MySpace, Photobucket, Bebo and other high-traffic Web sites were exposed to banner ads that contained Trojan horse software that could wreak havoc on a computer.

Web security company ScanSafe tracked the malicious ads back to Yahoo's Right Media network and estimates that they ran several million times, according to The Washington Post's Security Fix news site.

"All a visitor to one of these sites needed to do to infect their machines was to browse a page that featured the ads with a version of Internet Explorer that was … Read more

Yahoo Music apparently slated for cutbacks

According to a report yesterday in The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo's restructuring plan will likely involve significant cutbacks at Yahoo Music, including the shutdown of one or more of its subscription-based services.

In fact, it looks like Yahoo has already removed all links to its Yahoo Music Unlimited To Go service. The service, priced at $11.99 per month, allows users to transfer files to a compatible portable device. The service now can be found only by conducting a search, and I'm not sure if Yahoo is accepting new customers for it. That leaves Yahoo Music Unlimited, which … Read more

Hate your friend's avatar? Redo it

The truth is, some people just don't have much style; and it's up to you to usher in the revelation.

That's one way to look at a Yahoo Messenger plug-in that helps you give your buddies' avatars a makeover (see special feature for more on avatars). Back in the old days, before plug-ins were invented, we had to coax and needle our contacts for permission to outfit them with some fancy new 'dos and duds. Now we can mount an indirect atta--suggestion--for avatar rebirth, all in the name of good chatting fun.… Read more

Yahoo-Blue Lithium click on Web display ads

Yahoo agreed to buy advertising network Blue Lithium for $300 million this week, a deal that adds to a string of industry acquisitions and signals a growing new direction for online ads.

Blue Lithium, based in San Jose, Calif., specializes in selling performance-based display ads across a network of Web sites. Like search-related text ads, performance banners let advertisers pay for exposure to customers only when people respond to the ad, whether it's by agreeing to receive more information or by taking some action. The privately held company, which also sells behavioral targeted ads, is ranked the fifth largest … Read more
