Audi boss: U.S. not ready for premium subcompact

HERNDON, Va.--Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen says the United States and its small-equals-cheap mentality isn't ready for premium subcompacts such as the Audi A1, which goes on sale in Europe later this year.

De Nysschen told Automotive News last week that Audi is "seriously looking" at bringing the A1 here in the car's next generation in six to eight years. Bringing it here earlier could damage efforts to build widespread recognition for the Audi brand, he said.

2009 Audi S8 (review)

With the S8, Audi puts a monster engine in its biggest luxury sedan. The ride suffers a bit, but this car is fast and handles well, while not leaving behind any of the fancy tech gizmos in the cabin. It's a big car, which means it takes a push to get going, so forget about any tire-squealing glory. This is a car for adults.

Audi turns to Nvidia for 3D navigation

Audi's new Q5 sports navigation graphics empowered by chip-maker Nvidia, along with a radically updated dashboard interface, which Audi calls the Multimedia Interface, or MMI. Along with outlined buildings, some landmark buildings in major urban areas will be rendered with textures, making them easier for drivers to recognize from screen to real world. Audi is also including 3D topographics maps, so you can get an idea of what the terrain ahead … Read more

The five most uncomfortable rides

A great car can be fast, comfortable, or cheap, but never all three. As a lover of speed and cheap thrills, I often find myself behind the wheel of vehicles lacking in the comfort department.

But what qualifies a car as uncomfortable? Sometimes it's a bone-rattling sport suspension or oddly bolstered seats. Other times, it's a jerky, quick-shifting transmission.

We've rounded up the five most uncomfortable cars to pass through the CNET Garage.

Audi to bring hybrid Q5 to U.S. in 2010

DETROIT--Audi will offer a hybrid version of its Q5 crossover in the United States starting in late 2010, says Wolfgang Hatz, head of power-train development for the Volkswagen group.

In an interview last week at the auto show, Hatz said Audi must offer a hybrid model to compete with rival vehicles that already offer the technology, such as the Lexus RX 400h. The BMW X6 will be offered as a hybrid late this year, and Mercedes plans to roll out a hybrid in each of its major models starting with the S400 hybrid this year.

But Hatz said he thinks … Read more
