Digg on iPhone, title says it all

Yesterday the Digg team unveiled an iPhone-friendly version of their site. The lighter-weight version shows 10 stories at a time and lets users sort back and forth between pages using large navigation arrows at the bottom of the screen. Each story shows how many Diggs it currently has, along with a permalinked page that contains a brief description, link to the full story, and the top five comments. Best of all, users can log in and Digg stories.

Coming soon is a way to browse the top stories by day or week view.

Digg Bait and Switch

Getting onto the front page of Digg.com is a lofty goal for many SEOs. They know that hundreds of links will ensue -- from blogs, Digg mirrors, individuals' del.icio.us bookmarks, etc.

Search marketer Alan Rimm-Kaufman's first successful Digg bait, conducted last month, was centered around a 120 foot long water balloon. Indeed Alan made it onto the Digg homepage, receiving 22,694 visits in the first 4 hours after being dugg, and 33,072 visits in the first 24 hours. With the Digg effect, the traffic spikes dramatically -- to the point that it often brings … Read more

GetMobio: Twitter, Digg, and more on your mobile phone

Mobio has just added a handful of new services to their GetMobio phone app including Digg, Twitter, Kaboodle, and an RSS reader. Users download the small app on their AT&T or Sprint handset and get access to 11 different Web service widgets. It's reminiscent of uLocate's Where widget offerings, although there's no GPS support or monthly charges.

The Digg implementation is a little underfeatured, as there's no way to actually Digg a story from your phone. You can still browse through popular stories on the front page, as well as user's profiles. The … Read more

Social News: How Digg represents a change in the way we get our news

Digg is one of Silicon Valley's greatest success stories. The social news site creates an interesting mix of news on its front page by letting the masses decide what they like. For the casual Digg user, looking through the stories on the front page will get you caught up on all of the major news of the day, along with some more obscure, but interesting stories. Digg offers a variety that the New York Times or CNN won't touch.

Digg is heavily dependent on the opinions of its users. The theory is that if you have enough people … Read more

Digg

Category: Community

Digg is a user-driven site that employs social democracy to bring new and upcoming stories to its front page. Users can submit their own links, be they stories, videos, or podcasts. Any registered user can then vote on the story by "Digging" it. When stories get enough Diggs, they make the front page, where they receive a considerable amount of eyeballs.

Since launching in 2004, the site has gone on to become immensely popular and is currently in its third iteration. Digg has created several ways to integrate story submission and user voting to third-party sites, … Read more

iPhone apps: Try before you buy

You don't need an iPhone to try out iPhone apps. Since the application platform is just a browser, you can see right now how some of the apps that people are building will look on your phone.

We've covered Digg and OneTrip already, but to see even more iPhone apps all together on one page, check out iPhoneApplicationList. For best results you should use Safari, although I've also had good luck previewing iPhone apps in Firefox.

Since the apps are just Web pages, no doubt there will be many, many iPhone app directories springing up soon.

Digg for the iPhone

What are iPhone applications going to look and feel like? We saw yesterday a simple shopping list application, and here's another one bound to be a big hit: Digg for the iPhone.

This "app," like others to come, is really just a Web site designed for the JavaScript in Safari, and for the iPhone's small screen. (It works in Firefox and IE, too). The interface employs the "fling" feature that Steve Jobs and the iPhone commercials show off: when you drag down a list with your fingertip (or mouse), and let go, it feels … Read more

Hands-on with Netscape's new social browser

Yesterday Netscape released a public beta of their new Navigator browser, and brought back the "Navigator" moniker. Firefox users will feel right at home, as the browser has been built off the same architecture and even works with Firefox extensions. Netscape has introduced several neat new features with version 9 that I think make it a fairly compelling browser choice.

The first thing users are likely to notice is the integration with some of Netscape's services. Users of Netscape.com, Netscape's redesigned start page that features user-submitted, and ranked stories by its users (similar to other … Read more

Sproose does social search, bookmarking

Sproose is a relatively young search engine that now allows its users to control search results via voting. Each search result gets its own vote count and the option to click "I like it," which brings the result up to the top of the heap. The obvious comparison here is Digg.

Sproose searches through videos, using Blinkx, although these results cannot be re-ordered or voted on. Users can also opt-in to have their votes recorded on their profiles for others to see and vote on. All results get their own comment area, where users can talk--although I doubt … Read more
