No work yet on release date, price, or if there will be a consumer version.

CES: Sony's tablet not aiming to be an iPad killer

LAS VEGAS--The tablet Sony has plans to release stands out at CES because it's actually not here, but mostly because Sony appears to stand alone in that it isn't positioning it as an iPad killer.

The company briefly noted that it's got a tablet in the works during yesterday's press conference.

"We'd really like to take the No. 2 position (in the tablet market) by 2012," Kunimasa Suzuki, deputy president of Sony, said at a roundtable discussion with company executives here today. Unlike the gobs of Android-powered tablets introduced this week, Sony sounded … Read more

CES: Samsung's 4G Galaxy Tab revealed

LAS VEGAS--On Wednesday, Samsung announced a Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab, but apparently it thinks we can't get enough Galaxy Tab news. It's probably right.

On Thursday the company, along with Verizon Wireless, announced the 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab.

Unlike the Wi-Fi-only Tab, this one gets a significant upgrade in at least a couple of areas. Samsung will upgrade the rear-facing camera from 3 to 5 megapixels.

Also, the CPU gets a slight speed boost, from 1GHz to 1.2GHz, using the same Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor.

Besides those details, the rest of the specs (so far) … Read more

CES: Opera now browsing tablets, netbook PCs

LAS VEGAS--Browser-maker Opera Software is taking advantage of the tablet rage at CES this year to demo a preview build of the Opera browser for tablets and Netbook PCs.

We got a look at it last night on an Android-powered Galaxy Tab and on a Windows 7-powered IdeaPad tablet. We even took a video, but unfortunately, one important feature--Flash--wasn't implemented on the demo units we saw.

What we did see has potential. Opera for tablets has the usual URL and Google search bars, and tabbed browsing. It also has the typical features of search, bookmarking, and history, to name … Read more

T-Mobile plans at least 25 4G devices in 2011

T-Mobile's focus at CES 2011 wasn't about phones, but rather about tablets and its 4G network.

Though no new phones were announced, the carrier said it plans to launch at least 25 new 4G devices in 2011. The company promised devices capable of peak download speeds of 21Mbps in the first half of the year and smartphones capable of 42Mbps in the second half of the year.

Fujitsu's laptops of CES 2011 include one with its own 3D camera, plus tablets

LAS VEGAS--Fujitsu is decidedly one of the odder ducks among laptop manufacturers, and their CES 2011 lineup of laptops unveiled last evening runs an interesting range of ideas, some better than others. To be honest, however, we're not sure we'd buy any of them. Still, here's the rundown for the curious.

Lifebook AH572: Of all Fujitsu laptops, this led the pack in oddness--a 3D laptop with polarized glasses instead of the far better-functioning active-shutter solution, the AH572 also comes with its own 3D Webcam capable of recording 3D video. The demo produced was far from compelling, however--yes, … Read more

CES: Sharp Galapagos coming to America in 2011

LAS VEGAS--Like seemingly every other company at CES 2011, Sharp is jumping on the tablet/e-reader bandwagon. But at least the company has one of the more unique names out there: Galapagos.

If the name sounds familiar (in the electronics arena, that is), it's because it's not exactly a new product. The Galapagos is already available in Japan, and it's been spotted making its way through the FCC approval process in the U.S.

But one thing is clear: the North American version of the Galapagos may bear very little resemblance to the existing Japanese one. For … Read more
