Nonfunctioning dictionary

MB Divination Dictionary allegedly provides definitions for 5,500 terms associated with astrology, tarot, and other New Age pursuits. This sounds like a useful tool, but unfortunately, the dictionary simply does not work.

The first screen is cluttered with ads for the software's publisher, which is the case for all Mystic Board programs. Past that, users go to a screen divided into several panes, one of which lists all of the dictionary's terms. Unfortunately, no amount of clicking on the term or on the Display button or Search button brought up a definition. Instead, we got a message … Read more

Confusing file conversion software

Neevia Document Converter Pro allows users to convert a variety documents into different formats. Although the program works well, it isn't always easy to figure out how to use it.

At first glance, the interface doesn't make much sense; after a few minutes of clicking around, we headed for the Help file, which comes with the program as a 98-page PDF. Thorough, yes, but a bit overwhelming, especially for users just seeking the basics on how to get started. Once we determined how the program works it was fairly easy to select a folder full of documents and … Read more

Changes to Google Docs hint at GDrive release

The sharp eyes over at the Google Operating System blog noticed that Google quietly changed some wording in Google Docs from "PDFs" to "files." While small, this could signal that Google Docs may soon support the viewing and editing of other file types, and possibly double as an online storage service--like the fabled GDrive.

Google has long-allowed users to upload PDFs to Docs. These could be viewed in Google's online viewer, but not edited. However, the service would not allow other items such as photos and videos to be imported, despite Google offering other … Read more

If not, their parents will easily be able to assist, making the Help file somewhat unnecessary. The program consists of Spelling Challenges, Word Jumbles, and a hangman-like Find the Word. The spelling challenge provides tutorials that prepare the user for hearing … Read more

TOEFL study helper

Desktop Sprite for TOEFL iBT Words aims to help users who are studying for the TOEFL English language test. This simple program gives users a lot of information, but requires a great deal of their attention to learn.

The program's interface is incredibly simple since it requires practically no user interaction. Laid out like a stock ticker, users will find three command buttons that are intuitive to operate. Not surprisingly, this program does not provide a Help file for users, but fortunately, none is required since it is so simple. The program consists primarily of words scrolling through the … Read more

Slow translation

GoNaomi aims to provide a multilanguage dictionary with which users can look up words in different languages and compare them side-by-side within the program's interface. Unfortunately, its slow performance and lack of translation options left little to be desired.

From the get-go, GoNaomi functioned slowly. The program indicated that there was a "fatal SQL" error, which led us to believe that there could be a problem with the program's database. Since the program is essentially a database, this is a very large problem indeed. We tried the program by selecting English as the language to which … Read more

The Getting Started section provides four icons for converting and modifying PDFs. There is a News box next to it.
