ViewSonic ViewPad 7 review

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 delivers Android 2.2 on a swift 7-inch capacitive display. But it's not all it's cracked up to be. CNET's Donald Bell offers his full review.

One of the more intriguing underdogs of the tablet wars is ViewSonic--a company known more for computer monitors than portable computers.

But don't let the name put you off. The ViewPad 7, ViewSonic's $450 Android 2.2 premium tablet, is a legitimate contender among 7-inch tablets. Stocked with front and rear cameras and the full suite of Google mobile services (including Market), the ViewPad is … Read more

Crave Extras: Samsung Galaxy Tab eyes Apple iPad

Last week I posted a video of the Samsung Galaxy Tab (Verizon Wireless) and Apple iPad running through a few quick performance tests. Some of the responses were...fevered to say the least. Just wait until my Galaxy Tab vs. iMac video drops!

In the meantime, Donald Bell and I discuss how the Galaxy Tab's efforts to take over the world are repeatedly foiled by the iPad and how Android, in its current state, may not make for the best tablet OS.

RIM accepting PlayBook apps for approval

In preparation for the launch of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet next year, Research In Motion is now allowing developers to submit their applications for approval into the company's BlackBerry App World.

Back in October, RIM announced the release of its Adobe Air software development kit, allowing developers to use that platform to create programs for the tablet. The company's developer page says it will soon offer "support for content and applications using Adobe Flash 10.1 and HTML5."

RIM did not divulge how it will go about accepting programs, nor did it say how many apps … Read more

Speed Tests: Samsung Galaxy Tab vs. Apple iPad (video)

Sure, it's fun to create charts and graphs and tell you how one popular product compares with another popular product (and we do and will continue to do that), but it's so much more fun to show you!

And by "fun" I mean a fracking nightmare! Seriously, recording a testing video is no easy feat (for me that is). These four-plus minutes of footage you see here were compiled from an hour and a half of (mostly useless) raw footage. Much of it included copious amounts of word-stumbling, followed by even more cursing. I learned a … Read more

RIM acquires TAT, designer of user interfaces

Research In Motion has acquired user interface specialist The Astonishing Tribe for an undisclosed sum, the company announced on its blog today.

TAT could be a major pickup for BlackBerry maker RIM. The company, which is based in Sweden, makes several different products for mobile device makers, and it's invested in the Android market with its "custom home screen," called TAT Home. That offering delivers gesture navigation and 3D widgets, and according to the company, is designed to give users more control over the "look and feel of the Android home screen."

Another product, TAT … Read more
