Tips for installing iOS 4

Are you still having trouble trying to upgrade your iPhone or iPod Touch to Apple's new iOS 4? If so, here's a workaround that could help.

After Apple released iOS 4 on June 21, a small but significant number of folks anxious to upgrade started reporting various issues from long download times to error messages to backups that never seemed to finish. In my corner, I tried several times to update my iPod Touch 2G by following the standard steps, but without any success.

Each time I triggered the update, the software would start to back up my … Read more

Laptops spotted at the CNET Showcase

Jetting off to San Francisco last Thursday to appear at the live Netbooks and Tablets CNET Showcase event, I thought the most interesting part might be seeing which systems the guest vendors were going to demo for the live audience.

With Toshiba, Asus, Panasonic, Nvidia, Samsung, and Archos on hand, there were plenty of examples of both traditional Netbooks and touch-screen PCs, including a few on our most-wanted list. While the upcoming Asus Eee Pad didn't make it, two other very interesting laptops did.

First was the Toshiba Libretto W100. With its dual screens and lack of a physical … Read more

How to use folders in iOS 4

In the nearly two years that Apple has been selling apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, I've accumulated pages and pages of them. I try to keep them organized, grouping games and similar apps together on separate pages--but it still involves a lot of flipping and searching to get where I want to go.

Apple's new Folders feature in iOS 4 offers a new approach to managing an ever-growing collection of apps, allowing you to group apps together under custom headings. Not only do folders cut down on the number of icons sprawling across your home screens, … Read more

Toshiba celebrates 25 years of laptops with new Portege, Libretto models

The very first laptops started turning up about a quarter of a century ago, so it's natural that we'd start seeing some nostalgic looks back (we've seen some vintage models recently from the Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba archives). Toshiba is taking it one step further by releasing a pair of 25th-anniversary laptops.

The first is the Portege R700, a follow-up to one of our favorite laptops, the Portege R500. While that 2007 model had a 12-inch display and was one of the last vestiges of the $2,000-plus ultraportable category (before Netbooks came in and provided a less … Read more

We're going to have great products … Read more

Apple releases Find My iPhone app

Apple has released a new app to help users track lost iPhones on the go. The Find My iPhone app does what the Web application version, found on me.com, did previously, but allows users to log in from another iPhone or iPad to aid in the search on the go.

True to Apple form, the interface is simple, elegant, and easy to use. Users need only log in to the application using their MobileMe user name and password to begin the search for their lost iPhone or iPad. Each device connected to the user's account will show up … Read more
