BARCELONA, Spain -- Sporting a 5-inch HD display, a quad-core processor, and LTE capabilities, Panasonic's latest two Toughpad tablets feel more like rugged smartphones than slates. The FZ-E1 runs Windows Embedded Handheld 8, while the FZ-X1 is an Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) device.
Like all tablets in its Toughpad range, the FZ-E1 and FZ-X1 are designed for rugged environments and will survive drops of up to 3 meters, and you can dunk them underwater to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.
The Windows-powered FZ-E1 runs off a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon … Read more
The Apple iPad Air might be a slick piece of design, but dunk it in the bath and it'll quickly turn into a lifeless slab. Enter the Sony Xperia Z2 tablet -- a 10.1-inch slate that is completely waterproof. It replaces Sony's existing Xperia Tablet Z, but packs in a new quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, adds the latest Android KitKat software and slims the design down to only 6.4mm thick.
The Xperia Z2 Tablet is due to go on sale in the UK and wider Europe in March. Sony has yet to … Read more

Qualcomm also revealed its Snapdragon 801 processor, the follow-up chip to last year's Snapdragon 800 -- its most premium chip line. Qualcomm has boosted the performance of the CPU, GPU, digital signal … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- Making its debut at Mobile World Congress 2014 is Alcatel One Touch and Mozilla's first Firefox OS-based tablet, the 7-inch Fire 7. I was lucky enough to attend a briefing to try out the slate, but as luck would have it, the only working prototype available broke when I tried to unlock it.
Sadly, that left me with only a dummy shell unit to play with, but I was able to get a good idea of how the tablet feels. The one great thing about the Fire 7 is the material used for its rear. It'… Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- Can't decide whether to buy a new phone or get a tablet? With the Huawei MediaTab M1, that might not be an issue. It's an 8-inch Android tablet, but its SIM card slot allows it to not only take advantage of 4G LTE data speeds, but also lets it make calls and send SMS text messages, as though it were a regular phone.
It has a 1,280x920-pixel resolution, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and comes running the now rather old Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Huawei hasn't said exactly how much it … Read more
When does a phone become a tablet? Is it all about the size or is there more to it? With the MediaPad X1, Huawei has blurred the line more than ever. It swears blindly that this 7-inch Android device is a tablet, but it also has a SIM card slot that provides 4G LTE data as well as letting you make calls and send SMS messages -- functioning, essentially, as a phone.
As well as its phone skills, the X1 packs a Full HD display, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, an attractive metal body and a 13-megapixel camera. It's … Read more
The software giant on Sunday unveiled plans to release a reference design based on its mobile operating system and using Qualcomm hardware. Basically, that means anyone -- from established handset vendors like HTC to PC makers like Hewlett-Packard -- can build phones relatively quickly and cheaply. If the companies want, they can essentially slap their own branding on the device from Microsoft.
"We're open for business on Windows Phone to anyone who wants to build a Windows Phone," said Nick Parker, the … Read more
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said the app will come to Windows Phone in the next few weeks.
"Facebook Messenger is probably one of the most requested individual apps we have our customers asking for," Belfiore said during a press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Windows Phone has received praise from reviewers, but that hasn't equated to blockbuster sales. Last year, handset vendors shipped 33.4 million Windows Phone devices globally, giving the operating system a market share of 3.3 percent, … Read more
Having an online dictionary with you at all times is a terrific convenience. Google's "define" search feature is probably one of the quickest and most convenient ways to look up a word, but it's only good when you have an Internet connection. Providentially, there are two mobile apps that allow you to look up definitions even when you're offline.
The Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com mobile apps are two of the most popular dictionary apps in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The Android versions of the apps and Merriam-Webster's iOS app … Read more
