Hitachi unveils new media hard drives

LAS VEGAS--As there are more and more storage needs in the media world, hard-drive vendors are optimizing drives to store audio and video content. Western Digital has done it with the WD RE4-GP, Seagate with the Barracuda LP, and now, though it's pretty late to the game, Hitachi has decided to join the club.

The company announced today at CES its two new lines of hard drives designed for consumer electronic (CE) devices such as digital video recorders, IPTV set-top-boxes, video surveillance gadgets, and the emerging hard-drive-embedded TV markets.

The new drives include the 3.5-inch (desktop) CinemaStar 5K2000 … Read more

23-inch Cinema Display goes blank with pulsing LED

An issue some folks have been having with the 23-inch Apple Cinema Display concerns the screen shutting off and displaying a pulsing LED status that alternates between long and short pulses. This pulsing indicates a problem with the voltage the unit is getting from its power supply, so the issue is likely not a problem with the screen itself.

Affected users have found that the problem seems to be with how the inverter board on the display is handling the power sent to it by the included 90-watt power supply. Apparently a grounding issue with the power supply is resulting … Read more

27-inch LED Cinema Display firmware update fixes audio cut-outs

Apple has released a firmware update for the LED Cinema Display that addresses intermittent audio issues some people have been experiencing with the new monitors. This update should not be confused with the release of the LED Cinema Display Software 1.0 update, which was released several weeks ago to enable audio and brightness features for the new displays.

After the audio features were enabled, a number of people found that audio would either become very faint or be silenced altogether, requiring them to unplug the display and reconnect it for the audio to function again. If this has been … Read more

Apple's 27-inch Cinema Display has sound issues for some

Users in a growing Apple Support Discussions forum thread are expressing their concerns over what appears to be a hardware-related sound issue with Apple's 27-inch Cinema Displays. The main issue seems to be that sound will randomly cut out, ceasing to work until a system restart is applied.

Jerky video presentation with no or distorted sound is another symptom these users have noted, along with a delay when pressing the volume keys up or down to when the volume graphic is displayed onscreen.

Though a definitive solution does not appear to be available from Apple or users on the … Read more

Apple's LED Cinema Displays: Great, for some of us

Nearly two years ago, Apple released the 24-inch LED Cinema Display, much to the chagrin of not only PC users unable to use the display, but Mac users with older systems as well. This was thanks to Apple' s decision to use Mini DisplayPort as the display's sole connection option.

Fast-forward to today, Apple has upgraded the 24-incher with an extra 3 inches of screen real estate, and many more pixels onscreen--3.6 million to be exact. Apple also adds a ambient light sensor.

Otherwise, it's pretty similar to the monitor released in 2008. Luckily, this time there … Read more

The new Apple LED Cinema display: Same as the old? (photos)

We received the Apple Cinema display yesterday and noticed it looks a lot like the iMac 27-inch, but you know, without all that disk drive, keyboard, and silver lower bezel stuff.

Actually, it looks more like a larger version of the Apple LED Cinema Display 24-inch, released in 2008. You know, this thing looks so much like the 24-inch version that I probably could have just used the pics I shot from that monitor two years ago. Maybe then I could have actually done something other than that yesterday. Oh well. All in the name of timely and relevant.

Apple releases LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0

Apple released a software update for owners of the new 27-inch LED Cinema Displays. The update includes modifications to two OS X system preference panes, which enable brightness and audio features on the new displays.

This update requires OS X 10.6.4 to install. It is also relatively large for a standard display update (75MB download, with around 250MB of replaced system components), but upon looking at the install package, the update not only replaces the specified system preference panes, but also includes new releases of graphics drivers, frameworks, and other video and audio components to update compatibility with … Read more
