SkiTech review: Kombi ski gloves and mittens

While ski technology has dramatically improved over the years, there's one area that still leaves me cold: gloves. I have very poor circulation in my hands, resulting in freezing hands unless I wear mittens.

I like the added control that gloves give me, however, so I was excited to try out three different gloves from Kombi Sports. Of the different brands we reviewed, Kombi's gloves may well go farthest in seriously pushing the envelope in technology and design.

The Kombi gloves also include nice touches like the nose wipe (Sounds funny until you're on the slopes and then you discover what a necessity this little bit of fabric technology is...) and a generally lightweight feel without offering lightweight protection from the cold.

Take the Kombi iRip, for example. This is one of the absolute coolest gloves I have ever seen...or heard. The Kombi iRip lets you control your iPod from your glove. It's completely wireless so that you don't have to fumble for your iPod on the chairlift...only to watch it topple into the snow.… Read more

A site for the three little kittens

For children, it can lead to tear-rimmed eyes. For adults, it can lead to swearing. And for kittens, it can lead to the loss of pie privileges.

Yes, it's the lost mitten--or glove.

But have no fear. According to a story in the New York Daily News, a new site for New Yorkers slipped on to the scene earlier this month: OneColdHand-NYC.com.

The purpose of the site is to reunite found mittens and gloves with their rightful owners. Will New Yorkers warm up to the concept? Who knows. But the site's appearance does follow last month's … Read more

'Cooling glove' beats the heat

The contraption displayed here may look like some kind of ill-conceived device from the days of bloodletting, but it's actually a physiological instrument for the 21st century. "CoreControl" is described as a "cooling glove" that increases the flow of blood to the palm's "radiator zone" and lowers the body's overall tempurature two to five times faster than ice packs, fans and other traditional methods.

Avacore Technologies, which makes the device, claims remarkable success in tests with athletes, firefighters, military personnel and others. "You don't necessarily feel cooler; you just … Read more

'Roboglove' may help finger crooks

If we didn't know better (and we don't), we might think this was based on an old Monty Python skit.

U.K. newspapers are reporting the development of the "Roboglove," a wearable device that can supposedly detect weapons hidden on subjects while they're being searched. If the glove touches a concealed firearm, knife or other metal object, Gearfuse says, it will vibrate and alert its wearer of the discovery.

British police have reportedly been testing the device, which is said to be far more sensitive than standard metal detectors. And the glove is made of … Read more

Warm digits for digital happiness

Like many bloggers, some of our fellow Cravers are occasionally a tad more anxious than we prefer in sharing their personal issues. One such unnamed acquaintance (Caroline McCarthy) recently complained of poor circulation in her extremities, particularly the fingertips--a wicked chill that apparently is well beyond the capacity of over-the-counter devices like heated mice.

So after embarking on an exhaustive search, we came across a potential solution: the "iTWYF" gloves, which stands for "I Touch With Your Fingers," of course. Gearfuse says the secret to these $45 gloves are three "stylus pen point-like grasps" … Read more

iGloves solve the Winter Click Wheel Dilemma

YES. YES. YES. This is what I have been looking for ever since temperatures started dropping this fall. You see, I'm a firm believer in the benefits of walking around outside as much as possible. If I have time to get there on foot, I'll walk. I take my iPod along for entertainment. And when it's cold, I bundle up. Easy enough, right?

Wrong. When it gets cold, for obvious reasons I wear gloves. But gloved hands can't operate iPod click wheels, so I find that too often I either forsake my beloved walking soundtrack or … Read more

USB gloves for that homeless look

Whether at home or at the office, you can never satisfy everyone with the temperature. We've seen people almost come to blows over the thermostat, setting and resetting the controls whenever others weren't around.

To keep the peace--and your personal comfort--you can always get a pair of these USB Warmer Gloves. Japanese retailer RareMono Shop says they're safe because the gloves warm slowly with the USB power. Added benefit: You can get that homeless chic look without burning your hands over a garbage-can fire.
