Samsung introduces 3 new headsets

Samsung has announced three new Bluetooth headsets--the HM1610, the HM3600, and the Modus 6450--each of which offers slightly different functions.

The Modus 6450, for example, is the second device in the Modus family of Samsung's stereo headsets. It can be worn either in a mono-style headset or attached to a second earbud for a more stereo audio experience. Obviously the Modus 6450 supports A2DP stereo audio. This improves upon the previous model with the support of an Android app called Samsung FreeSync, voice alerts, and additional EQ settings. It even has a dedicated Voice Command button. The FreeSync app offers text-to-speech capabilities, caller ID services, and other features.

A slightly lower-end option is the Samsung HM3600, which Samsung claims is designed with comfort in mind, with an on-ear design intended to minimize ear fatigue. It features voice prompts, dual-mic echo and noise cancellation, and more. The cheapest of the bunch, however, is the HM1610. It also offers noise reduction but only with a single mic. It also features A2DP streaming, wind noise reduction, and automatic volume adjustment. … Read more

After getting some healthy hands-on time with the Nintendo 3DS last week, Jeff brings his impressions to today's episode of preGame. We'll also discuss some of the recently leaked details regarding Sony's PSP2, though we're anticipating more information on the yet-to-be-announced portable later in the week.

While we don't have a game to demo this week, we do have some show and tell in the form of the Astro A40 Wireless System headphones specifically designed for gaming. They may be a bit pricey, but Jeff will tell us why they're among the best-sounding gaming … Read more

CES: Creative's Tactic3D Omega wireless gaming headset plays with everything

LAS VEGAS--In announcing its new Sound Blaster Tactic3D Omega headset, Creative is touting the wireless gaming headset's versatility, calling it "the first wireless, cross-platform gaming headset to work with the PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, and PC, which is fully integrated."

What does fully integrated mean? Well, the wireless technology is built into the headset itself, so the Tactic3D Omega doesn't require any extra attachments to function with gaming consoles--and PCs--wirelessly (the headphones are powered by a rechargeable battery). However, as you can see from the picture, a powered dongle does have to be plugged into your … Read more

CES: Turtle Beach brings wireless 7.1 surround to Xbox 360, PS3

Turtle Beach is at CES 2011 to show off the company's spotlight product, the PX5. A successor to the X41 headset, the PX5 improves on the original design in many ways, most notably being the first headset to bring wireless surround sound and chat to the PS3. Two on-board wireless radios (Bluetooth and 2.4Ghz) allow for the headset to play nicely with both Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, and the Bluetooth capability can even be utilized as a cell phone headset or wireless speakers for AD2P music playback.

But perhaps the most impressive feature of the PX5 is … Read more

BlueAnt unveils new iPhone stereo headset

LAS VEGAS--Shocker. BlueAnt is branching out from its wireless Bluetooth roots and going, well, wired.

The company's officially unveiled a new premium stereo "headset" that's really a set of stylishly designed over-ear headphones that include an integrated mic and controls for the iPhone that allow you to make hands-free calls and play, pause, and track-forward audio selections.

The new BlueAnt stereo headset, which seems to have drawn some inspiration from B&W's P5 headphones, folds flat and comes with an extended-length (69 inch) stereo audio cable, a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter, and a protective … Read more

Get a Klipsch in-ear headset with mic for $24

Let's face it: the earbuds that came with your iPod, MP3 player, smartphone, or whatever probably bite. For my money, nothing beats the sound you get from in-ear earphones, which have the added benefit of reducing outside noise.

World Wide Stereo (via Buy.com) has the Klipsch Image S2m in-ear headset with microphone for $24.49 shipped. Retail price on these babies: $59.99 (though they typically sell for $30-40 elsewhere).

The Image S2m features an inline microphone with call button, making it a good match for your smartphone. (You can make/take calls without having to remove the … Read more

Gaming preview

While we haven't really been impressed with gaming's presence at the last few CES shows, there does seem to be some evidence that 2011 might be different. Given the news that Nintendo will be making an appearance in Las Vegas, we're anxious to see if the company will be offering a more in-depth look at the next portable gaming system to hit around springtime, the 3DS.

There is also a growing buzz surrounding what's arguably 3D's best platform: video games. Expect to see more 3D HDTV manufacturers showcasing their products' prowess while hooked up to … Read more

Urbanears' Plattan headphones get iPod remote

Among headphone manufacturers, Urbanears can certainly count itself as one that creates some of the most stylish sets on the market. Unfortunately, the high-fashion look associated with the company's Medis and Plattan headphones came at the sacrifice of sound quality.

While I don't expect much of an audio improvement from the Plattan Plus headphones, iPod and iPhone owners who place more emphasis on looks than function might be pleased with Urbanears' latest offering. The Plus 'phones keep the style of the Plattan and add an inline mic and playback controls for the ubiquitous Apple devices. Unlike many competing … Read more

You know how Bluetooth headsets are always getting lost or left behind? What you need is a way to piggyback one on your phone, so when you're done talking, you can just clip it right onto the sucker.

First things first: there's an error on the product page. Buy.com refers to this as a "protective charging case,&… Read more
