Thunderbolt gearing up to stick around

Apple's last major connectivity advancement was in the late '90s with FireWire, which was used as a replacement for the SCSI bus on Mac systems; however, the licensing and complexity of the port made it a less attractive option than alternatives like USB for many device manufacturers, especially given the ease of implementation and eventual speed of USB 2.0. While FireWire has extended beyond its initial 400Mbps speeds to offer 800Mbps, and potentially up to 3,200Mbps, in the face of current alternatives the technology does not seem to be advancing much beyond its current implementations.

Apple outlines some Thunderbolt limitations

One of Thunderbolt's features is that it contains both the PCI-express and DisplayPort protocols, which conveniently allows the mixing of both displays and other devices on the same daisy chain. In addition, because Thunderbolt contains DisplayPort, it should also be compatible with existing DisplayPort displays, such as Apple's 27-inch Cinema Display that was available before its Thunderbolt Display was released. Because of this a number of people who have been using Apple's DisplayPort-based Cinema Display have looked forward to using the monitor in a dual-display setup with Apple's new Thunderbolt Display, but unfortunately this will not … Read more

Checking AirDrop compatibility in OS X Lion

One new welcome feature in OS X Lion is the new AirDrop file-sharing technology. Unlike previous file sharing that required specific permissions setups, protocol enabling, and other configuration, as long as you have an active wireless card, then with AirDrop your system should be able to automatically detect other nearby Lion users and be able to send them files with a simple drag and drop action in the AirDrop window.

AirDrop is a technology that automatically discovers and sets up a quick ad-hoc network among computers over Wi-Fi networks, and provides an interface for file sharing. This is different than … Read more

First Take: Fifth-generation Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

Apple updated its AirPort Extreme Base Station today after weeks of rumors speculating about a batch of new wireless devices. With the release of today's Time Capsule update, we now know that little has changed from the previous dual-band design.

The new AirPort Extreme maintains the slim design of its predecessor with the same square shape, status lights on the front, and three Gigabit Ethernet Ports on the back. You also get a USB port to add a wireless printer, additional storage, or for use with Apple's Time Machine backup utility.

The price also stays the same at $… Read more

Code from a software update for Apple's AirPort Utility software that went out last night has been found to contain references to unreleased Apple wireless networking hardware.

9to5Mac and MacRumors both independently dug up mentions of a fourth-generation Time Capsule as well as a fifth-generation AirPort Extreme base station in the code that went out as part of the update. Those product iterations have not yet been announced by Apple.

Ahead of last week's Worldwide Developers Conference, rumor had it that Apple was planning to update both these products alongside AirPort Express, Apple's entry-level wireless networking product. … Read more

How to use iChat and AirPort to easily transfer files without Internet or external drives

Occasionally a situation arises where you need to transfer a file to someone but you have forgotten your external hard drive or burnable disc. In these situations, you can set up a private network and use iChat to easily transfer the file. This is particularly useful when no Internet is present.

To transfer a file using iChat with no Internet, click on the AirPort icon and choose "Create Network." Name your network, choose a channel (or leave it on automatic) and decide whether or not you want a password. If you're in a public place, a password … Read more

Apple throws a wedge into iMac Target Display mode

In 2008 when Apple released the mini-DisplayPort connection in its systems, the port at first seemed like a redundant technology with no implemented benefit over the mini- and micro-DVI offerings that Apple had in laptop systems. Nevertheless, as Apple started using DisplayPort in more systems, its extra features started being implemented, with one being the ability to use an iMac as an external monitor in Target Display mode.

To use Target Display mode, all you have to do is connect an iMac to another DisplayPort-enabled Mac and then press Command-F2 on the iMac's keyboard. After doing this, the second … Read more
