The ALO Island is a USB-powered digital audio converter/headphone amplifier, and it's a honey! Functionally, it's not so different than many of the other USB digital converter/amps I've covered on this blog, but it's a bit bigger. The others are about the size of a thumbdrive; the Island is a 1.25x1.25x3.25-inch aluminum "brick," but it's still small enough to be considered a portable device. It handles low- and high-resolution files, up to 192kHz/24-bit. The Island sells for $299 in the US direct from the ALO Web site, … Read more
The item will be up for auction on November 23 at Sotheby's in New York City, as part of an auction hosted by (Product)RED, the charity fronted by U2's Bono.
The machine is expected to go for $40,000 to $60,000 at auction. Apple showed off the Mac Pro, with its normal black design, at a live event this week in San Francisco. It will cost $2,999 and … Read more
Greetings CNET viewers! We've got another great lineup for you this week.
Halloween is just around the corner, and we suggest that this year you ditch the horror flicks, and instead get your scare on by playing one of the spooktacular video games listed in this week's Top 5 countdown. When it launched its second-generation Surface tablets and new peripherals, Microsoft told users not to expect the new Surface Power Cover or docking station until early 2014.
Something seemingly changed. The docking station is available now. (I'm not sure how long it will be, or how much stock is available, but if you really want it, hurry.)
I was alerted to the dock's early availability by reader Aaron Craig, a system administrator for risk-management company Bickmore. He ordered four Surface docking stations on October 22 and had them delivered on October 24. (He sent me pictures to prove … Read more
For the first time, Apple is offering a 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro model with Intel-only graphics silicon. So what is Intel's best graphics chip yet, and how good is it?
That $1,999 MacBook Pro is powered by a quad-core Haswell Core i7 processor with Intel's Iris Pro 5200 graphics. (The high-end $2,599 MacBook Pro adds a standalone Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics processing unit to the 5200.)
Apple describes the 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro's Iris Pro as "128MB of embedded memory to accelerate processor- and graphics-intensive tasks by acting as an ultrafast … Read more
It should come as no surprise that the 0.7-inch-thick 15.4-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Pro Retina models aren't easy to repair. iFixit said this week their repairability is still rock bottom.
Thin laptops, especially those from Apple, aren't known for easy accessibility or repair as their cases are often completely sealed.
That hasn't changed with the 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.

I didn't know the price of the M-Audio M3-8 when I first started listening, I just assumed it was $900 to $1,000 for the pair of speakers. No, the street price is closer to $600 for a pair, around the same price as for one of the reigning wireless champions, such as the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air or Bose SoundDock 10. And the M3-8s deliver so much more of the sound of your music than those two wireless models, it's not even close. For one thing a pair of M3-8s produce stereo, and the sort of … Read more
A video appearance by the company's chief designer, Jony Ive, is now a regular feature of every Apple product launch. Tuesday's release of new MacBooks and iPads was no different. Up on the screen, there was Apple's chief designer, attired in his customary T-shirt, offering yet another brief discourse on bezels and batteries, recounting how Apple surmounted sundry engineering challenges to achieve greatness.
"We are often faced with a paradox when we design to make products smaller and lighter, and at the same time more powerful....if we can overcome these challenges we can make something … Read more
DxO Labs announced its new Optics Pro 9 software Wednesday, an update the company believes does a better job stripping out noise than rivals such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture.
The software's Probabilistic Raw Image Enhancement, or Prime, takes more time than other noise-reduction algorithms, but it can detect finer details and accurate color amidst the noise speckles that afflict digital photos taken at high ISO sensitivity settings. DxO said the technology goes a full stop beyond the competition, meaning that it could cut noise from a photo taken at ISO 12,800 as well as a rival … Read more
