GoodReader for iPad gets even better

GoodReader? They should call it GreatReader! OK, pardon the lame joke, but what is arguably the best document viewer currently available for the iPad just got better.

The app already excels at bringing all kinds of files to your iPad: Office and iWork documents, PDFs, text files, HTML pages, photos, music, and videos.

It does this using any number of connectivity options. You can set up a temporary Wi-Fi connection to your PC, browse a Web site or specific URL, or pull files from just about any online source: mail and FTP servers, Box.net, Dropbox, Google Docs, iDisk, and … Read more

Man tries to sell pot, iPod Touch for iPad

It's always so galling when high enterprise is stifled by regulations.

So who could not feel a deep inhalation of sympathy for Jacob Walker? The 20-year-old from Gilbert, Ariz., stands accused, together with his friend of the same age, Joseph Velarde, of (gosh, no) trafficking marijuana on the Web.

Before you leap up on a large donkey, might I offer a few details to appeal to the better part of your judgment? According to AzFamily.com, Walker allegedly placed an ad on Craigslist in which he offered a trade which, to the objective eye, seems more than fair.

He … Read more

Majority of U.S. mobile Web use from iOS devices

The iPhone and iPod Touch still dominate mobile Web usage, but new monthly data shows Android is making some inroads.

Devices featuring Apple's iOS mobile operating system lead all other mobile devices with 58.8 percent of mobile Web traffic in the U.S. Android is far behind, but still in second place with 19.9 percent. Next is "other" with 10.9 percent, and after that is Research In Motion with 10.4 percent, according to data released by Quantcast on Monday.

Though Android has a ways to go to catch up with Apple's iOS, … Read more

Apple tweaks iOS rules for developers, but still no Flash

Developers working with the iOS platform got a small concession when Apple recently updated the developer agreement.

Apple threw more gas on the fire in its feud with Adobe last month when it quietly updated its developer agreement to say that "Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited."

That was widely interpreted to preclude using other platforms that allow developers to make one application that runs on multiple devices--for example, not just on Apple's iPhone, but on its competitors' devices as well. That included, among others, Adobe'… Read more

AT&T e-mail apologizes for iPad data breach

AT&T sent an e-mail to iPad owners Sunday explaining a data breach that occurred on its site and laying much of the blame with the group that discovered the hole.

The e-mail, which was signed by AT&T Chief Privacy Officer Dorothy Attwood, blamed "self-described hackers" for uncovering a hole in the company's Web site that allowed for the exposure of 114,000 e-mail addresses belonging to iPad owners, according to a copy posted on Boy Genius Report. Among the iPad users who appeared to have been affected were White House Chief of Staff … Read more

Readers' favorite uses for the iPad

I'm still trying to divine the true nature of the tablet, and the iPad in particular. But instead of trying to foist my opinion on readers, I'll let others do the talking since a lot of people seem to disagree with me--especially when I assert that the iPad has yet to find a solid, useful niche for me.

Before I jump to reader input, though, let me say up front that I use a MacBook Air (a three-pound ultraportable) as my main computer (along with a Verizon MiFi 3G Mobile Hotspot when I'm traveling) and own an iPhone 3GS. So, I'm guessing I'm a little more challenged to find a niche for my iPad than some.

Anyway, here is a sampling of reader comments from a May 23 post: "iPad caveat: Solution seeking a problem."

Audio system/cookbook: "I decided to flush mount the iPad into my mom's kitchen wall...the iPad became the ultimate song storage and categorized jukebox. We could search for any song, show album art, show full lyrics, and buy a new song whenever we wanted through Wi-Fi. We use apps like epicurious for recipes plus I scanned all of her old recipes in as pictures...Perfect for the kitchen. That is where the iPad belongs."

Productivity: "File management--get Goodreader (misnamed horribly), which allows you to maintain a folder/file structure, import documents from the cloud, and open documents in appropriate applications, such as pages. 2: PrintCentral--print to a wifi printer or a USB printer...3: TaskPro or Todo Queue for task management. 4: iThoughtsHD--a terrific mind mapping application."

Students: "I'm a student, and the iPad is great for me. I find it much more comfortable to study on the iPad rather than on a laptop screen. I take notes on my laptop, but then study them on my iPad. Before I got it, I printed out hundreds of pages of notes and PowerPoint slides and had to… Read more

iTunes ready for iOS 4; new App helps devs connect

Just weeks ahead of the official release of Apple's next-generation operating system for mobile devices, iOS 4, the App Store is ready to accept iOS 4 apps. To make the process easier, Apple released an App specially designed to help developers track sales and trend data, right from their iPhones.

Five ways iOS could make its way into Macs

Will iPhones, iPads, and other iOS devices usurp the venerable Mac, as some fear? Will the more versatile, powerful and universally compatible Mac prevail? Why must we fight, people? Maybe we can have it both ways.

We've wondered when (and how) Apple's iOS would evolve to challenge OS X. An absence of Mac focus at this year's WWDC has had Mac users panicking slightly.

In fact, it seems highly likely that Apple's iOS and OS X are bound to merge in some fascinating and (hopefully) useful ways.

How so? Well, let us brainstorm for you. We … Read more

Traveling with tech--Jasmine's Tech Dos & Don'ts

Allow me for a moment to flatter myself into believing that you noticed the glaring absence of this column last week so that I might have a reason to regale you with my tales of travel in Southeast Asia. OK, I'm not really going to do that, but I will say that the trip solidified my already deeply entrenched tech travel tendencies. The reason for this is twofold.

First, I only had about nine days to scream through three countries, which necessitated countless hours spent in airports and on airplanes. Second, I was flying standby on two major flights, which again required an undue amount of time in airports. (By the way, if you ever have to spend 40 hours in an airport, Changi, in Singapore, is a surprisingly enjoyable place to do it.) Vacationing is my forte, so rest assured you can take the following advice with confidence.

When I'm traveling, my first priority is to pack light--especially with the checked bag fees implemented by many domestic carriers these days. With that in mind, DON'T bring your laptop on vacation. If you take trips frequently, a Netbook is a solid investment for as little as $300. The iPad is also a fantastic travel-friendly option if you can afford it, and either gadget will suffice to keep you entertained or even let you get a little work done.

Even better, DO bring the most multifunctional gadget that you can. For example, the iPhone is not only an international phone but also a Web browser, camera, and gaming device.

In particular, I've become a proponent of ditching my Digital Elph in favor of using the camera in my Samsung Behold II, though for anyone else, I'd recommend the HTC HD2 instead. It might be clunky as a phone, but as an all-in-one device with a 5-megapixel camera, an easy-to-use Web browser, and plenty of entertainment extras such as Blockbuster On Demand, it's a great option for frequent fliers.

Of course, all of this is great in theory, but if you don't want to go out and buy all new gear, it may not work in practice. I for one was "forced" to travel with my Netbook (for video and Web), my Walkman (for music), my iPod Touch (for games), and my phone. And all the cables that go with them, which is why I cannot emphasize this next point enough: DO purchase a small compartmentalized bag for transporting cables and chargers. This 12-in-1 USB Travel Easy Cable Bag even includes pretty much any connection you could want on the go, and if you purchase just one USB wall adapter, you're set to charge nearly every device.… Read more
