You'd never hear us complaining about our job here at CNET Car Tech, but there are times during the course of our reviews that we find ourselves wishing we could drive our test cars a bit more, well, illegally (all in the interests of thorough automotive journalism, you understand). Yesterday, our prayers were answered at an event hosted by the Western Automotive Journalist association at Laguna Seca raceway in California. One of the first things we sought to find out was whether Audi's Quattro system worked as well on the track as it had on the roads. We … Read more
In his latest prizefight, Brian Cooley looks at two high-stepping German cars, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and the Audi R8. Both cars have all-wheel-drive and both top $100,000 in price, but which is better? Brian compares powertrains, handling, design, cabin electronics, and a special category for cars in this segment.
Aiming squarely at the BMW X3 and the recently-announced Mercedes GLK, Audi unveiled its own car-based SUV this week in the shape of the Q5 crossover. With a sleeker design than the lumbering Q7 and an drivetrain designed to walk the line between performance and economy, the Q5 is Ingolstadt's contribution to the red-hot crossover market. Audi is also using the new model as a showcase for some of its latest cabin tech, including the third generation of its MMI interface and a hard-drive based media and navigation system. Audi previously impressed us with its handling technology in the Audi TT, but even that car feels a bit staid when compared with the 2008 Audi R8. The R8 holds the pavement as only a low-slung car with all-wheel-drive and massive tires can. Then Audi throws in its magnetic damping technology to keep the suspension tuned for whatever kind of road you are driving on and puts the engine in the middle to balance the car. All of this combines to let us take the R8 around corners at speeds we wouldn't think possible.
For cabin tech, the R8 … Read more
Audi has recently made big media pushes with a luxury forum at the Super Bowl and rides for celebrities at the Oscars, and now the company touts its involvement with the upcoming superhero movie Iron Man. Audi got director Jon Favreau to include the Audi R8 as Tony Stark's personal car in the movie, citing it as an appropriate car for the most technically knowledgeable superhero. As luck would have it, we have an Audi R8 in our garage for review this week, so of course we had to make our own duplicate of a still from the movie. … Read more
Audi's big news from this year's Geneva auto show is the release of its updated A4 Avant. The all-wheel drive wagon is six inches longer than its predecessor, giving it more than 50 cubic feet of storage space. The Avant comes with a choice of two direct-injection gasoline and three diesel engines: the top-of-the-range V-6 is good for 265 horsepower. The Avant is based on the same layout as the updated A4 sedan that we saw in Frankfurt last year, and features the same suspension configuration and the same Audi drive select system, which lets drivers influence how … Read more
The premium sports-sedan market is generating a lot of competition for the 2008 Audi A4. With a recently updated 3-Series from BMW, a totally revamped C-Class from Mercedes Benz, and respectable contenders from Infiniti, Acura, and Lexus, the current Audi A4 is beginning to look a little out of its depth. The bread-and-butter of Ingolstadt's model lineup is itself due for a complete overhaul later this year. From a technology perspective, we're expecting to see some of the goodies that so impressed us recently in the 2008 Audi A5. We are particularly eager to see the departure of … Read more
