Samsung's debut e-book reader arrives

For its first e-book reader, Samsung Electronics has crumpled up and cast aside its catchy codename and gone downright bureaucratic.

Formerly known by the working label of Papyrus, the new SNE-50K reader will initially be sold only in South Korea, starting Wednesday. But the device may reach other markets across the world sometime next year, said a Samsung spokesperson.

Unlike larger readers such as Amazon's Kindle, the SNE-50K was designed by Samsung to be compact, sporting a 5-inch screen and weighing 6.5 ounces. The device will come with 512MB of memory and offer a resolution of 600x800 pixels.

Borrowing some features from a PDA, the SNE-50K will support handwriting recognition, so users can write and store memos, manage schedules, and view calendar appointments. The device will also let people read text files, PDFs, and Microsoft Office documents by converting those files into a viewable BMP graphic format.

The reader will sell for 339,000 Korean won, or about $270.… Read more

Samsung chip hits 1GHz. Is it bound for the iPhone?

On Monday, Samsung and Intrinsity jointly announced one of the fastest processors to date aimed at devices like Apple's iPhone.

The new 1GHz chip co-developed by Austin, Texas-based Intrinsity and Samsung is similar to the processor that currently powers the iPhone 3GS: a 600MHz Samsung processor based on the ARM Cortex A8 design. U.K.-based ARM licenses its low-power chip designs to many of the world's largest chip suppliers including Samsung, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and, more recently, Nvidia.

The new Samsung-Intrinsity chip, code-named "Hummingbird," could be bound for a future iPhone or like device. "… Read more

Palm Pre vs. Samsung Instinct

I think it's about time I write my comparison post. I've had the Pre a while now and I've officially said goodbye to the Instinct. I could call it a bunch of bad names now and not have to worry about it throwing a fit and refusing to work...

Not that it ever needed any encouragement.

The past year of my life has been filled with ups and downs in our relationship. For the first month or two I loved the Instinct. Coming from a flip-phone that had very basic capabilities, I felt empowered with the Instinct. … Read more

Samsung claims watch phone is world's slimmest

Look, LG, Samsung just totally pwned you with the S9110--supposedly the world's slimmest watch phone at 11.98 millimeters--by announcing that the wristwatch will be out this month in France for about $640. The LG GD910 which measures 13.9 millimeters, on the other hand, is due out in the U.K. only in August.

We're sure Samsung doesn't want us to miss out on the dual-band (900/1800MHz) wristwatch with a 1.76-inch 176x220-pixel touch screen and wireless e-mail syncing capability via Microsoft Outlook.

The S9110 also supports Bluetooth 2.1 and will have 40MB of … Read more

Samsung LNB530 series Quick Take

The Samsung LNB530 series of LCD HDTVs was introduced in the spring of 2009. It consists of the 32-inch LN32B530, the 37- inch LN37B530, the 40-inch LN40B530, the 46-inch LN46B530 and the 52-inch LN52B530.

CNET did not review any of these models, but we did review the Samsung LN46B650, which may give you an idea of how the LNB530 will perform. The LNB530 does have a few step-down features, though, including only three HDMI inputs and a lack of 120Hz processing, picture-in-picture, a USB input, and networking capabilities. It also has a lower contrast ratio, which likely means worse black-level … Read more

T-Mobile introduces Samsung Gravity 2, Samsung Comeback

On Tuesday, T-Mobile announced the upcoming availability of two new messaging cell phones, the Samsung Comeback and Samsung Gravity 2. The Comeback will be available starting Wednesday, July 22, for $129.99 with a two-year contract, while the Gravity 2 is expected to ship in August (though an exact release date and pricing were not announced at this time).

Perhaps the more interesting of the two is the Samsung Comeback. The handset features a flip design where the screen opens to the right (like a book) to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. The phone has plenty of messaging options, with … Read more

Samsung adds high-end Blu-ray home theater system

Samsung already offers a pair of Blu-ray home theaters systems (the HT-BD7200 and HT-BD1250T), and the company is planning to add a third option in August, the HT-BD3252. While most Blu-ray home theater systems available from LG, Panasonic, and even Samsung, are aimed at offering Blu-ray home theater at the lowest price possible, the HT-BD3252 will carry an $800 price tag, pushing it out of the "budget" category.

The HT-BD3252 costs $250 more than the step-down Samsung HT-BD1250T, and it has a couple of important upgrades to justify the price. The most obvious difference is that the BD3252 … Read more

Hands-on review: Twitter on your TV

As Netflix and other broadband media content integration has become the new "it" thing for TVs, it was time to revisit Yahoo TV Widgets. Since we last reviewed the platform's offerings, Yahoo has rolled out a number of new widgets and promises even more to come, including widgets for Netflix, Showtime, and other video services. For now, however, the official Twitter client is one of the most compelling widgets, so it will be the first we review as part of an ongoing series.

Overall we found the Twitter widget well-designed and we appreciated that, unlike Verizon's upcoming Twitter application for Fios, it actually lets you post tweets from your TV. Next time your Twitter craving kicks in right in the middle of "30 Rock" and you're too glued to the TV to search for your phone or laptop, this widget can save you the trip. You can now proudly tap out those 140 characters that will display on your feed above a timestamp that reads "from Yahoo! TV Widgets."

Anytime you load Yahoo Widgets with Twitter enabled, the Twitter "snippet" in the dock along the bottom of the screen displays the most recent tweet, whether it's from you or someone you follow. These are updated in nearly real time without having to hit a refresh button or take any other actions. It's unfortunate, though, that you're limited to just the most recent update in the snippet. The Samsung and LG TVs organize some other snippets, namely Yahoo Weather and Finance, into scrollable tabs that show multiple weather or finance updates right in the dock, without having to expand the widget.

When expanded, the clearly laid out and clean-looking main window presents three tabs that will take you to a stream of tweets, messages, or replies. There's also an option to post a new tweet.

Using the TV remote to tweet can be a frustrating experience since you have to use the directional pad to select letters on a virtual keyboard.… Read more

Software update unlocks GPS on Verizon Samsung Omnia

Samsung Mobile just sent out a pretty sweet tweet that should make owners of the Verizon Wireless Samsung Omnia very happy.

The cell phone manufacturer has officially released software update CF03, which unlocks the smartphone's GPS for use with other location-based services. Previously, you were restricted to using Verizon's VZ Navigator app to get turn-by-turn directions, but now you can choose from other third-party navigation solutions.

Other features of the CF03 include the latest Microsoft Adaptation Kit Upgrade (AKU 1.5.1) and Bluetooth support for connecting to VZ Access manager. You can find the download and installation … Read more
