Why I hate my mouse

Before I bought my iMac, the vast majority of my work was done on a notebook, so I never was forced to use a mouse. I used to be an all-desktop guy back in the late '90s and found that most of the time, the rubber ball worked quite well. Today? No such luck.

I hate every mouse I own. I own a wired and wireless Mighty Mouse (yuck!) and a wired laser mouse from Logitech that should have been burned years ago. But it doesn't end there. When I go to a friend's house and use a … Read more

Microsoft Sidewinder strikes again

The last reference to a Microsoft Sidewinder product on CNET was back on an old must-have games roundup from 2002, where we pointed to a Sidewinder steering wheel. Microsoft seemed to have let its gaming hardware brand die since then; that is, until today's announcement of the Sidewinder Mouse. Available in October for $80, the new Sidewinder comes with the usual laundry list of features we demand in our high-end gaming mice these days, including a few we haven't seen before.

Naturally, the Sidewinder is a laser mouse, with a customizable sensor that tops out at 2,000dpi. … Read more

9-button mouse would drive us nuts

If someone were out to sabotage what little productivity we had left, issuing us one of these would be a good start: a nine-button mouse. Why anyone would want one of these is beyond us--but, then again, we have a tough time just working a remote.

This contraption would surely confound us in countless ways, but Coolest Gadgets Zone says this wireless optical mouse would speed things up considerably while maintaining proper ergnomics, recharging in its cradle when not in use. All that may be true, but we'd have to figure out how to read the diagram shown here … Read more

A mouse that will ensure rejection

You know those magazine surveys that say women reject "nice guys" because they try too hard? Here's a perfect example of what they're talking about.

Our insanely prolific friends at Japan's SolidAlliance have come up with the "I Love You" optical mouse, which announces its feelings whenever the scroll wheel is turned (unless your stomach turns first). And if you need more ways to unburden your pent-up emotions, the heart-shaped peripheral has lights that will turn a "shiny bright red" when connected.

Fareastgizmos says it's sure to "make that … Read more

GPS mouse or maple bar?

Road warriors come in all shapes and sizes, and their equipment reflects that diversity. Nowhere is that more evident than the stalwart mouse, where functions can range from built-in VoIP phones to back massagers while looking like a George Foreman Grill the whole time.

But those who truly love to boast of their worldliness would probably want to get one of these: a GPS wireless mouse. The Bluetooth Navilock BT-451, according to OhGizmo, has been released for would-be Magellans on the European market with a "SuperSense" chip that's capable of indoor and outdoor tracking.

Why one would … Read more

Combo mouse or George Foreman Grill?

There are all manner of combo mice that take on a variety of forms not included in their original job description, ranging from laser pointers to VoIP handsets (not to mention hand warmers and back massagers). But Ezkey has proven once again that there's no end to number of new acts we can expect from the hardest working peripheral in show business.

The latest incarnation is a mouse that doubles as a number keypad for uber-accountants and the like who need the ability to crunch at all times, according to PClaunches. Yet there's another thing that intrigues us … Read more

The 'MoGo Mouse' goes remote

Gadgets don't always live up to their names, but the wireless "MoGo Mouse" is one that definitely does--it's always on the move, morphing into various forms while adding functions along the way despite its nearly one-dimensional profile. Its latest incarnation sacrifices some of that svelte physique, but for good reason: It's now become a remote control for presentations too.

The additional media features apparently make the Bluetooth X54 protrude a bit from the laptop's PC card slot, which also serves as a built-in charger, so it doesn't disappear in storage the way its … Read more

Logitech's disappearing dongle

If Logitech is stocking its vending machines with free cans of Red Bull, we wouldn't be surprised. Especially in the hallways of its mouse division.

Only days after debuting its "MX Air Mouse," the company is reportedly preparing to release a successor to its highly regarded "VX Revolution" laser mouse. The "VX Nano" is wireless and meant for laptops, like its predecessor, but there's a noticeable difference: The new version's USB dongle is tiny--so small, Pocket-lint says, that it doesn't even need to be removed from its port when the … Read more

A mouse that pandas can love

Computer equipment made of wood is certainly nothing new, but our eco-blogger sensibilities compel us to take note whenever we find an item made of our favorite enviro-friendly casing material: bamboo.

To that end, today we offer this bamboo optical mouse in a polished natural finish, made of a hard variety that Red Ferret says is "panda-friendly." Pandas eat only soft bamboo, apparently, so they're not threatened by the harvesting of this type of vegetation.

If you stick with Crave long enough, you'll pick up all manner of trivia like this. Tomorrow: South American marsupials.

Touch-sensitivity for a Mightier Mouse?

Is Apple bringing some semblance of the iPhone's touch screen to a new mouse? Could be, if the mouse described in this patent application spotted by Hrmpf.com ever goes from diagram to final product. In lieu of any mouse buttons--Apple's never been a big fan--the surface of the mouse would be one continuous surface made of an "optically transmissive material" and would feature a "multipoint touch-detection mechanism" that could detect one or more of your fingers.

You'd be able to program certain movements of your fingers--swiping, tapping, rotating--to perform certain actions such … Read more
