iPad 2.0: New design, manufacture process?

Things we absolutely know about the next version of the iPad: it's not going to have a 7-inch screen.

Thanks to CEO Steve Jobs' epic rant against the spate of tablets set to be released now through next year of that size, it's an easy prediction. But what else do we know for sure about Apple's followup to the insanely successful iPad? Not much.

Rumors, leaks, and guesswork can offer this, though: it probably has a front-facing camera (FaceTime makes perfect sense), will likely come sometime in the first quarter of next year (Apple has a pretty … Read more

Android catches up with Apple on ad network

Android is now running neck and neck with Apple's iOS as the largest U.S. smartphone platform on the Millennial Media mobile ad network.

The number of mobile ad impressions (how often an ad appears) in the U.S. for Android jumped 8 percent in October over September, according to Millennial Media's "October Mobile Mix Report." That increase means both operating systems accounted for a 37 percent share of all impressions tracked by the ad network.

Ad requests (the number of times a mobile ad is clicked on) rose for both operating systems last month but … Read more

Hands-on with iOS 4.2 Gold Master

Over the past two weeks iPhone and iPad users alike have been waiting for the promised iOS 4.2 update. After a false alarm last Friday, Apple pushed out Gold Master developer versions of the update today and Wednesday. So as we wait for the real deal--which could come as early as tomorrow--we downloaded the Gold Master to give the update a trial run.

Apple won't release an official list of new features until iOS 4.2 becomes available to the general public, but we scanned through the additions that have been observed so far. Nothing will blow your … Read more

Sketch-A-Search with Yahoo to find good eats

Back in April, Yahoo Mobile announced a unique approach to searching for nearby restaurants with the Sketch-A-Search app for iOS. The concept of the app couldn't be more simple: pull up a map of the area that you're currently in, and then sketch a circle (or any approximation of a shape) around the neighborhoods or blocks of streets where you'd like to eat. Sketch-A-Search then drops in pins to indicate the restaurants that fall within the designated space. Clicking the pins pulls up information on each establishment, including the phone number, operation hours, and Yahoo user reviews.… Read more

Dell Duo: Are Windows tablets on the rise?

There's the iPad, and there are Android tablets, but the most intriguing dark horse of them all might still be Windows 7. Despite many products we've seen that have been awkward grafts of Windows 7 touch technology, the imminent arrival of the Dell Inspiron Duo re-confirms that Windows 7 convertible tablets aren't dead yet.

However, are they shaping up to be better than what we've previously seen?

We reviewed the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t earlier this year, a well-designed but flawed convertible Atom / Windows 7 convertible tablet that felt bulky and slow. Recent designs such as the … Read more

Netflix CEO: iPad affects us 'very little'

SAN FRANCISCO--The iPad and other tablets might be the future for a lot of media, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a panel discussion at the Web 2.0 Summit this afternoon that the tablet craze affects his company's strategy "very little."

"People prefer large screens," Hastings said. "So the impact of Xbox, PS3, the Wii phenomenon--huge impact. The impact of the iPad--it's a great system, but the Mac laptops outstrip the iPad for Netflix viewing by a huge factor." Long-form video viewing does not translate that well to mobile platforms, … Read more

RIM needles Apple on tablet browser speeds

We're not saying Research In Motion's PlayBook tablet has a better browser than Apple's iPad (after all, it hasn't come out yet). We're just saying that RIM is saying its tablet has a better, or at least faster, browser. Surprised? We're not.

In a video posted Monday on RIM's official BlackBerry YouTube channel, the PlayBook and the iPad are placed side-by-side. Then Matthew, a member of the browser group at RIM, takes the tablets to the same sites on the same connection at the same time. The PlayBook appears to load the first … Read more

Hacker offers advice to prosecutor in AT&T-iPad case

Showing real chutzpah, or delusion, a member of the hacker group being investigated for exposing a hole in AT&T's iPad customer Web site says he will forgive the federal prosecutor if the probe is dropped and offered to work with him to fight cybercrime.

In an open letter to Assistant U.S. Attorney Lee Vartan that was also sent to journalists and the Full Disclosure security e-mail list," Andrew Auernheimer begins with "Howdy Lee" and offers some "friendly advice."

"I'm writing you to help clarify this situation we continue to … Read more
