Although it's a utility van, we were charmed by the funky look of the Ford Transit Connect at the 2008 New York auto show. The Transit Connect is another example of a European success that Ford intends to try out in the U.S. Ford shows off three potential uses at the New York auto show, a New York taxi, a band wagon, and an audio/video installer van. By summer of next year, you might be seeing Transit Connects in U.S. cities.
When it comes to taxicab design, there are two basic templates: the big boats out of Detroit like the Crown Victoria and the quainter, more bulbous look of the London taxi. It's that latter form factor that prevails in the new concept car--er, taxi--from Ford Motor.
In fact, underlying the hackney concept vehicle is a van straight out of Ford's European fleet, the Transit Connect. The automaker has been selling that van in Europe since about 2003 and plans to bring it to the U.S. in 2009. The taxi version is just one possible configuration; Ford is … Read more
Nissan showed off its electric-powered concept vehicle at the 2008 New York auto show. Based on Nissan's existing Cube small car, currently sold in Japan, the Denki Cube concept uses an electric powertrain with lithium ion batteries.
If there's one gadget that's been egregiously over-produced, it's the digital photo frame. We've never understood the need for so many brands, versions, and sizes, except for the networked Ceiva (though we're not so sure about the whole refrigerator thing).
So if companies insist on making these already-overdone products, we appreciate some originality--as in the idea for a retro-styled Polaroid snapshot lookalike conceived by photographer Dave Friedman. The people at Polaroid apparently agree, according to Stuff, because they're working to make the concept a reality.
As originally envisioned, the wireless frame would present photos … Read more
No, that's not a typo in the headline, and your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. This concept Motorola phone designed by Paris-based Lysandre Follet packs a stereo camera in the back. We're not talking about the standard configuration found in most camera phones, but two modules mounted side by side.
This dual-camera system would presumably be used for taking 3D images but, other than Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, nothing else was said about the phone in a post on Newlaunches. We're half-guessing, however, that Follet's inspiration came from a particular Samsung calculator model.

Some people might find its appearance a little tacky, but the aptly named USBee concept proposes more than just a bee-themed USB thumb drive. Beneath its eye-catching yellow-and-black exterior is a thoughtful design that addresses one of the most common problems with USB flash drives today: accidental breakage while still in the computer's USB port.
The USBee uses a clever combination of silicon and aluminum shell to create a bendable neck, according to Yanko Design. This not only prevents the flash drive from being ripped off, but it also protects the USB port from damage. What's also interesting … Read more
Volvo showed off its ReCharge plug-in hybrid concept, based on the Volvo C30 model, at last year's Frankfurt auto show. We were skeptical when we saw it because even though it looked cool, Volvo only had a cutaway demonstration model to show off, and the company has no current hybrid cars among its model lineup. But Volvo reports today that it has a working concept on the road as part of a larger program to develop next generation powertrains. Volvo, in a consortium with Saab, the Swedish government, and energy company Vattenfall, announced a five-year plan to develop plug-in … Read more
Specialty automaker DiMora Motorcar promises to make an eco-friendly 1,200 horsepower sedan, called the Natalia SLS 2, available next year. By eco-friendly, the company suggests that its new V-16 powerplant will be ultraefficient and so emissionsfree that it doesn't even need a catalytic converter. DiMora lists a host of high-tech features for the Natalia SLS 2, such as 60 computer systems "tightly integrated to control the vehicle's performance, safety, comfort, communications, and entertainment." Along with mundane features such as four-wheel-drive and four-wheel-steering, the Natalia SLS 2's more outlandish technologies include special paint that will … Read more
Bamboo has made its way into everything from mice to TVs, but for some reason it seems to have missed mobile phones. But MobileWhack has found a concept from this year's Greener Gadgets Design Competition that wants to bring everyone's favorite eco-material to the handset.
Shockingly named "Bamboo," the proposed phone would compete with the likes of Nokia's "Remade" concept in what could eventually prove to be a major eco-trend in the global marketplace. Despite its name, the handset would be made of corn and other natural materials as well for safe, degradeable … Read more
Here's an idea that we bet could easily become the most copied design, after the iPhone. Check out the Mooon+." (Yes, that's three o's, presumably since that will be your expression of awe when you first see this concept phone in person.) It isn't so much the copycat touch screen and sleek lines that will make an impression, but designer Sunman Kwon's clever twist at the end. Snap off the top piece and--voila!--you get a Bluetooth headset that's been craftily docked onto the handset the whole time. There are no other specs … Read more
