StuffIt Deluxe registration error: the cause? Regarding the previously mentioned registration error for StuffIt Deluxe's Magic Menu Contextual Menu, Joseph Carlin writes: "Using ResEdit, I discovered that Magic Menu CM registered itself in my Acme Widgets CM module. My guess is that when you install the Magic Menu CM with an empty CM Items folder, there as no problem. If other CMs exist, Magic Menu adds its registration resource to the wrong CM."

G3 Macs and ClearPhone minor glitch with sound setting

Robert Blumenkranz describes a problem with ClearPhone and the new G3 Macs that some users will experience. The source of the problem is that the G3 Macs default the Sound Input to "None" (a new option in the Monitors and Sound control panel, not found on previous models) rather than "Microphone."

Robert writes: "When running ClearPhone for the first time as a demo, you will see a window startup selection with two audio setup buttons, used to select the microphone sound levels: 'Manual' and 'Automatic.' When using a G3 the Automatic selection will fail, causing … Read more

One day, Theo Maschas saw an icon of the U.S. flag in his menu bar, next to the Application menu icon. When he accessed it, it contained a list of several countries, and their flag icons. He did not know where it came from. After posting the question on Apple's Discussion Boards, Apple's John Phelps provided the answer:

These countries represent different keyboard layouts as selecected by the Keyboard control panel. This appears to be a new option in Mac OS 8. You can now select, via checkboxes, more than one keyboard layout. If you do, the … Read more

Broderbund tech support did not have a solution to offer. However, he found the following posting on a Usenet newsgroup: "For some reason, the Riven disks seem to be exceptionally sensitive to dirt. Even smudges too faint to see can have a devastating affect on readability. Try cleaning the disks, even if they don't seem to need it. Then clean them again. And again." He … Read more

AppleShare TCP mount at startup problem: Delete AppleShare Prep file

Last week, we covered a problem (described by Ben Pearcy) some users have with getting a TCP/IP connection when AppleShare's "Mount selected items automatically at startup" was selected. A couple of work-arounds were suggested. Further reader comments offered other suggestions, especially one involving deleting the AppleShare Prep file:

Ed Kao writes that "Ben's problem is due to the AppleShare Prep file in the Preferences folder. Since AppleShare remembers your server connection settings, it remembers the old setting. That is why Ben is connecting via AppleTalk. To connect via TCP, the client computer must have … Read more
