Iomega and VST

VST is showing off Zip drive modules for PowerBooks. Quite nice. More relevant to MacFixIt issues, I spoke to Doug Atkinson of Iomega about the issue of using non-Iomega drivers on Jaz drives ( as covered here before). As he is Iomega's Manager for Macintosh Software Development, I figure he is as close to the final word on this matter as I am likely to get. He said that it is fine to use third party drivers, such as HDT Toolkit and Silverlining, with a Jaz drive. It may not have certain features, such as the Password security, available with … Read more

From the Expo floor...

After checking outvarious booths in the Exhibit Halls, here are some personal highlights:

Aladdin Aladdin said to expect a Mac OS 8 compatible update to StuffIt Deluxe within about 60 days. They also said that the problem with CyberFinder is similar to the StuffIt problem. As a result, they are now likely to update CyberFinder at the same time. I also had a preview look at Aladdin's new FlashBack utility for saving previous versions of documents that would otherwise be lost when you hit the "Save" button after revising a document. Could be a life-saver for those … Read more

MacUser/Macworld merger

As previously reported, MacUser and Macworld will be merging into one magaizne to be called Macworld. The MacUser/MacWEEK booth was distributing copies of Macworld magazine (along with MacUser and MacWEEK) - a strange sight. And given that the show issue of MacUser is the last issue the magazine will print, it is not surprising that the booth was a bit on the quiet side.

Apparently, details of how this new Mac Publications merger will work is still very much in flux. How the two staffs will be combined, how the unified web site will look, and more - are … Read more

Apple Fireworks

Beyond Jobs' speech, Apple literally lit up the sky last night with a 30 minute fireworks display over the harbor. It definitely got your attention if you were anywhere where you could see it.

Steve Jobs keynote address

You probably don't need me to tell you the highlights of Job's keynote address (it's already been reported everywhere and Apple stock jumped up almost 7 points as an aftermath). But I'll summarize anyway (and offer a few personal views).

First up was the announcement of Apple's new Board of Directors. There are 4 new members, including Steve Jobs himself and Larry Ellison. No Chairman was named; neither was there an announcement about the naming of a CEO.

The other "big news" was the announcement of the first of what is intended to … Read more

SerialSpeed 230 version 1.7 fixes crashing bug

Version 1.7 is the latest update to SerialSpeed 230. It fixes bugs - most notably a compatibility problem with Apple's Open Transport Serial Arbitrator and Apple's ARA Serial Arbitrator that caused crashes in a number of cases. It also improved support for AOL.

SerialSpeed 230 is a control panel that allows Power Macintosh and Quadra AV owners to use their telecommunications software at top speed, up to 115Kbps or 230Kbps, even if the applications do not provide built-in support for these high speeds. It is Mac OS 8 compatible.

Of more general relevance, the SerialSpeed press release … Read more
