Open Transport Remote Access glitch

Rick Chin writes: "There is a problem with the Open Transport Remote Access extension/library, which has been confirmed by Apple. A unrecoverable crash/freeze will occur during the boot process if the startup disk is locked and the Open Transport Remote Access extension tries to load. This problem has actually been around since System 7.6 or 7.6.1. It affects many security or access control programs. Currently the easiest solution is to disable this extension."

Making a Norton Disk Doctor startup floppy disk

So you downloaded the 3.5.1 update and patch for Norton Utilities and now you want to create a startup floppy disk with Norton Disk Doctor on it. Here is some advice from Symantec (Thanks, Koichi Takagi):

AOL 3.x problems with Mac OS 8? No.

Bob Patterson found AOL unusually slow after updating to Mac OS 8. When he asked AOL tech support about this, he received the following surprising reply:

"Unfortunately, America Online 3.0 and Mac OS 8 are not compatible at this time. America Online and Apple are working together to resolve this situation but a resolution date has yet to be determined."

Update: Gene Steinberg (an AOL Forum leader) echoed my initial reaction to this: "That's absurd. AOL 3.0 is bundled with the Mac OS 8 CDs. It's definitely compatible, but sometimes tech support people … Read more
