a. GoMac 1.1 is the new update to this utility that gives you a Windows-like Program Bar and Start Menu. The GoMac FAQ file claims that this new version fixes the problem with recalibration on AppleVision monitors (noted here previously), among its other fixes. However, the MRP notes that some problems still remain.

Epson 800 and Canvas 5 conflict

Mel Patrick writes of yet another glitch with the Epson Color Stylus 800 (connected via LocalTalk and running under Mac OS 7.6.1): "While trying to print from Canvas 5, only the top 1 or 2 inches would print before the page would eject, the next page would start, print an inch, eject start next page...etc. I called Epson tech support and they said: Change the memory allocations in the Epson Monitor2 Print Spooler so that the 3 numbers are completely different (i.e., Suggested is 1000, Minimum is 1500 and Preferred is 3000). It worked!

RAM Disk Fix utility posted

Adam Wunn has written a patch application, 7.6.1 RAM Disk Fix, that should solve the shut down freeze problem for those users that have a shut down freeze linked to the presence of a RAM Disk in Mac OS 7.6.1. The patch is based on a suggestion by Alex Maluta, previously posted here at MacFixIt. This problem has been acknowledged by Apple, whose official position is that a fix will not be available until Mac OS 8.

WWDC news

An Apple press release is a good place to start to check out what's happening at the WWDC. The highlight announcement is that: "Apple outlined a radical software development strategy for Rhapsody, its next generation operating system. By utilizing the 'Yellow Box' Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), software developers will now be able to deploy their applications on a wide range of operating systems including Rhapsody, Mac OS, Rhapsody for Intel, Windows 95 and Windows NT."

WWDC CD-ROM discs may have a virus

A reliable source at Apple informs me that they have received word (currently unconfirmed by Apple) that there is a virus on the CD-ROM discs being given out at the WWDC. In particular, according to the attendee who reported it, the MBDF virus is contained in:

1. The FileMaker Runtime application on the Java Solutions for the Mac OS CD 2. The Neon software/NetMinder Ethernet Demo.sea on the WWDC Power User CD

a. Problem shutting down an 8600? Larry Lloyd writes that SOS-APPL tech support informed him that "they just recently became aware of the inability to shut down an 8600 with a printer attached. I don't know which printers this applies to (but certainly my StyleWriter 2400)." The problem appears to be with the logic board. No other information regarding a fix was given.

Update: Larry Lloyd now writes that Apple came and replaced the logic board on his 8600. This fixed the shut down problem.

Epson Stylus Color 800: network printing problems

PPP Menu startup crash reported a. GearBox beta Rockstar writes: GearBox switches your Internet settings, swaps bookmark and mailbox files, and opens and monitors connections...quickly and reliably.

b. PPP Menu 2.0.3 A Rockstar web page lists a new update to this utility. It works with both FreePPP and OT/PPP. It has a host of new launcher features and fixes bugs. (The same web page also has links to FreePPP Menu and FreePPP Control Strip).

Epson Stylus Color 800: network printing problems

a. Ernest Payne writes that "all attempts to set a zone using the Epson Zoner 1.2 software that ships with the Ethernet interface for his Epson Color Stylus 800 result in freezing the Mac." Epson tech support told him: "The Epson Zoner is not compatible with system 7.5.2 or above. No update is currently available." One technical support person said that the software will not be fixed to work with that printer.

PointCast/Emailer conflict? (MacPPP involvement possible)

Mark Shedlin writes that, after updating online from PointCast Network 1.0 to 1.0.1, he started having system freezes that he eventually determined were due to a conflict between PointCast Network and Claris Emailer 2.0. I contacted Tony Gentile (of PointCast) about this and he replied that their engineers have been unable to duplicate this problem so far. However, he points out that they have been using OT/PPP.
