Do you know Jack?

Meet Jack. Jack hates tangled earphone wires. He's a bit of a neat freak, actually, but that's good news for you. Jack would just love to help you keep your cords free from tricky twists and gnarled knots, if only you would give him a chance. Just throw your earbuds over Jack's shoulders, twist the cable around his neck and feet, stick the plug in his hand, and Jack's a happy camper. Chances are you will be, too, because instead of spending time detangling cords, you can get right to listening to your music. Jack will … Read more

iFrogz Audiowrapz: protection and sound in one

Why buy a protective skin and a set of speakers for your iPod Nano when the iFrogz Audiowrapz lets you kill two birds with one stone? Well, for one, a separate set of speakers would probably sound much better, but that's beside the point: The Audiowrapz protects your player while offering the added bonus of three external speakers in one very compact package. No denying it's a little gimmicky, but also kinda cool. The case itself adds some length to the third-gen Nano, but isn't bad looking. In fact, I think the overall look is randomly stylish, … Read more

Macally FlexTune rocks dual iPod docks

In the ever-saturated market of iPod speaker docks, distinguishing oneself from the crowd is important for the bottom line. Macally attempts this with its new FlexTune stereo speakers by including dual iPod connections: one in the standard position in the bottom of the central docking area, and one sticking out of the right wall of the cradle. This second option allows for an iPhone or iPod Touch to be docked sideways for wide-screen video viewing. It's actually a great idea for sharing since the FlexTune outputs sound to the speakers and the iPhone and Touch already offer large-enough screens … Read more

Macworld: Blinged out iPhone Cases

Much like CES, the vast majority of iPhone accessories were limited to carrying cases or skins, which is surprising given that this was the event where the iPhone was introduced. While entries from iSkin and CaseLogic were there, these entries from Gilty Couture caught my eye. A gold-plated case ($99) and a diamond-encrusted (not real diamonds, right?) case ($135). However, not sure what the taste factor would be here. When we rolled up to the booth it looked as if a deal was going down, so you may see these soon.

ezGear XL90 Sound Bar is long...really long

Um...I'm pretty sure this thing is as long as I am tall. Wow. The press release for the ezGear XL90 Sound Bar doesn't include any information on the unit's measurements (nor does the product page, for that matter), but comparing it to the iPod that's docked into it in the picture, I think it's safe to say that this speaker is at least nine iPods wide. OK, so that's only about 22 inches--shorter than me, to be sure--but it's still really long compared to any other iPod speaker dock that I've … Read more

New DLO iBoom Jukebox looks the part

Among the cooler products coming out of Macworld 2008 is DLO's iBoom Jukebox, an iPod-ready speaker dock expected to ship this spring. Style-wise, this unit certainly lives up to its name: It's shaped like a mini jukebox. It's a fun design, though the iBoom isn't all about form over function. Hidden beneath the grille wrapped over the speaker's arch, you get two 1-inch tweeters and two 3-inch woofers. The unit also includes a super sweet-looking RF remote that can be used from up to 100 feet away (even through walls) and features its own screen … Read more

Designer Macworld Part 2: Belkin

Here's something blasphemous: My favorite booth at Macworld was not Apple's, but Belkin's. It knocked my socks off.

Think back a few years: Belkin was a ho-hum manufacturer of unsexy cables and nondescript PC accessories. Then came the iPod, and the company recognized a good thing when it saw one. Belkin jumped on the iPod shooting star and produced a nice line of interesting, well-conceived accessories. But essentially, the company outsourced its aesthetic to the iPod, piggybacking visually as well as functionally on that core device.

Now, Belkin is turning into a design and innovation powerhouse in … Read more

DLO's HomeDock goes high-def (sorta)

The iPod accessories are hitting hot and heavy at Macworld. DLO has used the occasion to take the wraps off its HomeDock HD. As you might guess from the name, the latest iteration of DLO's HomeDock Deluxe now offers upscaled HD video output (720p or 1080i) from an HDMI port built into the dock. (For those that still haven't made the leap to HDTV, it'll still connect to standard televisions via the composite or S-Video jacks.) In addition to playing back iPod-based videos on the big screen, the HomeDock HD also provides TV-based navigation to all of … Read more

Jook makes you a roving radio station

Gaming peripheral maker Razer has decided to try its hand in the social music scene with its subsidiary Jook Inc. The company has developed a new technology--aptly called Jook--that allows users of any MP3 player to share music with others in the same vicinity. It consists of two parts: a transmitter that plugs into any MP3 player (via either a 3.5mm headphone jack connection or proprietary dock based on the player) and an indicator light that hangs from down the front of the user as part of the headphone cable. A button or switch on either the transmitter or … Read more

Wii need guns. Lots of guns.

If the Wii Zapper strikes you as too 'gunlike,' then you're probably not going to like these Wii accessories. Brooklyn-based CTA Digital showed off an entire arsenal of gun-themed Wiimote peripherals.

From the pistol-like Magnum Gun to the submachinegun-like Buzz Gun, CTA showed off no less than six Zapper-like Wii gun attachments. The Shot Gun for Wii stood out among them, a hulking, heavy pump-action shotgun accessory. The Shot Gun was a mock-up, and hopefully the final version of the gun will be lighter than the bulky model CTA displayed.

While they look fun, CTA's Wii accessories were … Read more
