Announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Dacor's 30-inch Discovery IQ wall ovens sit at the top of the smart appliances I've seen so far, at least in terms of price. At $4,299 for the single oven model, $7,299 for the double kit, this product line is definitively aimed at wealthy cooking enthusiasts. What might it be like to cook as (for?) a member of the connected one percent?
The Whirlpool WRL767SIAM Side-by-Side Refrigerator is the debut refrigerator in Whirlpool’s 6th Sense Live appliance line. At $1,999, the WRL767SIAM has a reasonable price tag, at least compared with smart fridges we've seen from LG and Samsung. If its performance and the utility of its smartphone and tablet app live up to Whirlpool’s promises, it may be hard to recommend those more expensive models.
The WRL767SIAM is a side-by-side refrigerator. Per the product page, it has a 16.6 cubic foot space for the fridge, and 9.9 cubic feet on the left half for the … Read more
Samsung is looking to make your laundry room a lot smarter with the WF457, a washing machine that boasts Wi-Fi connectivity with your smartphone, not to mention an 8-inch LCD touch screen. At $1,499, the WF457 certainly isn’t cheap -- a midrange, nonconnected washer costs half as much -- but it still comes in at a lower price than competitors like LG’s Smart ThinQ Washer, or Whirlpool’s smart washing machine.
Our full review of the WF457, along with the other smart washers in its class, is coming soon. For now, let’s take an early look … Read more
The MSRP of this GE Profile Double Convection Wall Oven PT9550SFSS is $3,699, putting it firmly in luxury appliance territory. A simple remote control app actually makes this one of the smartest smart appliances we've seen so far, but to truly justify its cost, this oven also needs to shine as a cooking device. We'll report definitively on that in the next few weeks. For now, here's our take on the basic features, in particular the mobile software.
This GE oven is available in a stainless steel or black finish. The stainless-steel version I'm testing … Read more
With a retail price of $349, the Infinuvo CleanMate QQ5 Plus is the least expensive of the robot vacuum cleaners we reviewed. It also performed worse than every other vacuum we tested. I can accept some drop-off in performance and features as you move to the lower-cost tiers of a product category. I can’t accept a product like the QQ5 Plus that, as we found in our testing, fails to deliver basic functionality. This is the only sub-$400 vacuum we’ve tested so far, so we certainly can’t write off the entire lower-price segment, but of the … Read more
With a competitive $199 retail price, the Cuisinart SS-700 is a handsome-looking kitchen appliance with thoughtful design and durable-feeling construction. It is designed to make single servings of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in less than a minute by way of a K-Cup brewer design licensed from Keurig. If you're environmentally conscious, using the nonrecyclable K-Cups will likely not appeal to you, but unlike three of the five other brewers we tested, the SS-700 includes a reusable coffee filter. That fact, along with its sturdy construction and a generous three-year limited warranty make the Cuisinart SS-700 a sound choice … Read more
With a retail price of $179, the Keurig K75 Platinum Brewer sits in the middle of the price spectrum among the sub-$200 single serve brewers we've reviewed. Overall, it is a reasonably priced, reasonably sized brewer that performs only adequately compared with its companions on the market. It has the ability to make coffee, tea, or hot chocolate using the brands available in the Keurig K-Cups or your own ground coffee or tea with the purchase of a separate reusable brew basket. One of our primary complaints about the machine centers around its construction, which seems light and … Read more
You geeked out. You showed your friends how crazy it is that you can make the living room purple using your phone. But now, the novelty has worn off and you're wondering, "Why did I buy this again?"
Because the Philips Hue is so much more than a glorified light bulb. In the latest release of the Hue software (coming to Android by October), Philips added a slew of innovative features that finally make the Hue as useful as it is fun.
Remote access Before you can enjoy all of the Hue's features, you'll have … Read more
It's happening quickly; our in-hand homes are getting out of hand. The growing availability of connected appliances and gadgets may bring convenience that is always at our fingertips, but it also brings clutter. Not necessarily physical clutter, but the kind of clutter that dominates tablets and smartphones everywhere: app clutter.
Whether we're talking about entry systems, lighting, or thermostats, smart connected appliances require an app to control them. This of course is what makes them convenient; being able to control everything by tapping on a few icons has been a dream since at least the first remote control … Read more
You wouldn't believe how busy we've been.
The pictures below, most taken by the shockingly talented Colin McDonald, showcase part of what we've been doing. You'll see the rest early this fall when we unveil our new appliance review section.
What you're looking at is the in-progress interior of our new appliance testing facility, where we're creating the next generation of reviews for an industry that's building tech into every corner of the home. The outside of this warehouse in Louisville, Ky., looks modest. But inside, we'll be launching a new and … Read more
