Microsoft's Surface Touch Cover could be suffering from a defect, according to several users.
Folks over at the Surface Forums are complaining that the Touch Cover splits at a seam near to where it magnetically connects to Microsoft's Surface slate. One user in that forum, "Br1an_g," said that the cover "in the middle at the join to the screen is peeling," adding that it appears the "top layer has come loose and is ruffling up." Other users confirmed they were experiencing similar issues.
Windows 8 is all about touch. And that means a lot more touch laptops and hybrid devices are popping up at PC stores in the U.S.
Microsoft's brick-and-mortar and online stores are among the most aggressive at stocking up on touch-capable Windows 8 portables. Its online store now shows eight traditional (non-hybrid) clamshell laptops with touch screens. Those include the $499 Asus VivoBook X202E, the $899 Sony Vaio T13, and the high-end $1,349 HP Spectre XT TouchSmart.
Throw hybrids, or so-called "convertibles," into the mix and the number jumps to 16. Convertibles -- which include … Read more
The iPad Mini isn't so new anymore, but new cases for it continue to arrive.
What's the best one? Very hard to say. The problem is that everybody has different tastes in cases. And, of course, some folks choose not to bother with them at all.
In doing this roundup I've tried to present a good selection of products, highlighting some of the top cases that have … Read more
The $499 Surface model appears to be a popular item on the Microsoft store's Web site.
The other two models -- both come with the Touch Cover -- are no longer listed as back-ordered.
"The store periodically will run out of certain models," a Microsoft representative told CNET in response to an e-mail query.
Calls to Microsoft stores in Century City, … Read more
With the Surface, Microsoft has become a purveyor of cool hardware. And, like Apple, Microsoft wants to explain it you.
The newest video (below) illustrates, among other things, how the touch-cover glass and the screen are fused together into one piece; why the integrated kickstand is important; and little things like how the camera in the back matches the tilt of the screen in its kickstand position.
It's the latest in a series of videos Microsoft has been posting to describe the design effort that went into the Surface.
Twitter is rolling out new profile header photos to their users. The new option is very similar to Facebook's Timeline photo, in that it appears in a larger area along the top of your profile page.
Before, you would only have the small avatar image to work with when representing yourself or a brand. A larger photo on the profile page helps convey interests or services more clearly. Ready to add one? Just follow these steps:
Step 1: After logging in to your Twitter account, click on the Settings cog in the top right-hand corner and choose Settings.

Apple has once again been cleared of infringing on patents held by Mirror Worlds.
In a ruling posted today by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, the court upheld (PDF) a lower court decision from April 2011, which sided with Apple.
Mirror Worlds originally accused Apple of infringing on its patents with features included in its Mac OS X operating systems going back to 10.4 "Tiger," as well as in its iOS devices including the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. The company, which was founded by Yale University computer-science professor David Gelernter, … Read more
When a hot Apple product hits the market, it has a tendency to spur a cottage industry of accessories. The MacBook Air is no exception, with several companies making MacBook Air cases and covers.
Since the Air's design hasn't really changed in the last couple of years, most of the cases, covers, and sleeves that worked for the older 11- and 13-inch 2010 and 2011 models should work with the updated 2012 MacBook Air versions.
As always, feel free to make your own suggestions for cases and covers you like and we'll consider adding them in the next update.

The new iPad -- or the iPad 3, as I incorrectly like to call it -- has been out for a while, but the new cases keep on coming.
If you've already seen an older version of this list, I apologize, but the good news is that it's been updated.
As most people know, Apple barely changed the design of the third-generation iPad and a lot of existing iPad 2 cases fit the iPad 3. While a few of those iPad 2 models are represented in this round of top cases and covers, I did my best to include plenty of new models, as many accessory makers have refreshed their lines in the last few months. … Read more
