HP Palm posts teaser video for Feb. 9 event

I've got to give HP Palm credit. Even after Engadget seemingly spoiled the surprise of February 9 event with a story and photos of two WebOS-based tablets, the company shot back with a message saying, "Think you saw the latest on Engadget? Think again." It certainly piqued our interest and now, we're even more enthralled thanks to a new teaser video. … Read more

HP: New WebOS products shipping soon, another unveil set for March 14

Ever since HP bought Palm in April 2010, we've been waiting to see new products come out of the partnership. We'll finally get our first glimpse on February 9 when the company is expected to unveil the PalmPad, as well as other mobile devices, but even better news is that we won't have to wait long for them to come to market.

Speaking to the BBC during the World Economic Forum, HP CEO Leo Apotheker said that the new products, which will carry a new name under the HP brand, will be on sale just a few … Read more

Survey: iPhone owners most loyal to their brand

Despite the surge in Android phones, iPhone owners are still by far the ones most loyal to their devices, according to a study out this week by mobile analytics provider Zokem.

Based on results from Zokem's U.S. Mobile Life panel in 2010, the iPhone took home a loyalty score of 73, far surpassing the score of 40 given to its closest competitor Android.

Gauging the loyalty that smartphone owners have for their current devices, the score looks at whether people will stick with the same brand for their next purchase as well as other factors. Even among non-iPhone … Read more

Will HP's WebOS tablet arrive too late?

There's little doubt that a tablet will take center stage at HP's February 9 WebOS press event. Nearly a year after acquiring Palm, HP may finally show off a WebOS-based tablet and hopefully spill the beans on the product's features, pricing, and carrier agreements.

But announcing a product and delivering it are two different things. Recent rumors have the actual release date of HP's new tablet pegged at September of 2011, putting it several months behind the competition.

Apple, RIM, Dell, and Motorola all have high-profile tablets set to be released in the first quarter of … Read more

The 404 736: Where we see an iPhone on the Verizon (podcast)

The exclusive partnership between Apple and AT&T wireless has finally come to an end! At a press conference in New York today, Verizon's COO Lowell McAdam announced that the company will begin selling its own iPhone 4 starting next month. Wilson's off covering the announcement, so Digital City's Joseph Kaminski fills in for an agnostic perspective on the release.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will be the same model that AT&T carries now except that the Verizon version will connect to the CDMA network instead of GSM. Aside from better service (hopefully), Verizon will also offer personal Wi-Fi "hot spot" access that lets up to five devices connect wirelessly to the iPhone at once- no word yet on how much extra you'll have to pay for that, however.

Additionally, one of the limitations is that CDMA is that the network won't allow for simultaneous Internet browsing and voice calling, which might be a dealbreaker to some, but most will just be satisfied to make uninterrupted phone calls.

Starting on February 10, a 16GB and 32GB model will cost $200 and $300 respectively with a 2-year contract dea, but we're still in the dark regarding data prices and whether or not there will be an unlimited options on deckl.

So this leaves current AT&T subscribers in a tricky situation: jump ship now and pre-order the Verizon iPhone 4 or wait a few months for Apple to release the next version, hopefully with access to Verizon's superfast 4G LTE network? Check out today's show to hear our best advice for prospective iPhone owners!

HP planning WebOS event for February 9

Don't expect all the big announcements to end at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Hewlett-Packard will be hosting a special WebOS event on February 9 in San Francisco. The company didn't say what it will announce at the event, but the invitation's tagline says, "Think big. Think small. Think beyond."

It's possible that the company will unveil its rumored tablet, the PalmPad. That device is expected to run WebOS and could feature a few different form factors. However, rumors surfaced last month claiming HP would be unveiling the device at CES this week.… Read more

Is the PalmPad a recycled HP Slate?

A new report says that HP will show its WebOS tablet at CES next month, called the PalmPad.

HP has been talking about the PalmPad almost since the company bought Palm and its WebOS operating system in the spring, though the company has repeatedly said the device won't actually be shipped until the end of the first quarter.

But a Fox News story today has some very curious details. The Fox reporter's source forwarded him a diagram that is purported to be the forthcoming PalmPad. It has few labels except for a note about an optional PalmPad dock. … Read more

Leaked accessory hints WebOS tablet is near

The pieces seem to be falling into place for HP's first WebOS-based tablet.

Executives have confirmed several times that there will be a touch-screen tablet featuring Palm's mobile operating system released sometime between January and March, though little else is known about it. HP has trademarked "PalmPad" and an exec has even publicly referred to an upcoming tablet as such, but it's not clear that will be the product's actual name once it starts shipping to customers.

Today Engadget got its hands on an internal HP slide that shows not a tablet, but what … Read more

Rubenstein: Palm's ceiling limited without HP

SAN FRANCISCO--Former Palm CEO and current Hewlett-Packard employee Jon Rubenstein is proud of the product his former company created but said there was no way Palm could turn it into a smash hit.

WebOS, the mobile operating system that along with the Pre revived interest in Palm over the last few years, is actually the most forward-thinking mobile OS on the market, Rubenstein said today here at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference, dismissing comments made yesterday by Google's Andy Rubin that Palm belonged in the "old" category of mobile players. While's true that the old … Read more
