Best Buy has launched its latest trade-in deal for iPhone 4S or 4 owners looking to score an iPhone 5.
People who trade in a working iPhone 4S will receive a $200 gift card, while those who trade in an iPhone 4 will snag a $100 gift card. Those gift cards can then be applied toward the purchase of an iPhone 5 with the usual two-year agreement.
Available only in Best Buy stores, the promo started on Thursday, August 15, and runs until Sunday, August 18. As always, certain conditions apply. The offer is good for Verizon Wireless, AT&… Read more
Many big names like Amazon offer to turn your old gadgets into cash, but now the other big name in retail -- Walmart -- wants to take your unwanted iPhone, iPad, Galaxy S3, or other devices in exchange for gift cards that you can use right away at the company's ubiquitous stores and Web site.
This week Walmart announced its "Gadgets to Gift Cards" program in advance of the expected release of the next iPhone on September 10. It works like similar buyback programs, with the interesting added twist that users can go spend their old gadget money right away at a Walmart store or Walmart.com, even before they send their device in for verification (provided they pass a credit check first, meaning you don't want to try to scam this one, folks). … Read more
The U.S. International Trade Commission has sided with Apple in a decision to ban some of Samsung's phones in the U.S.
In a mixed ruling Friday, the ITC said some of Samsung's older devices infringe on two of Apple's patents, while finding no violations in four other patents.
The ruling is final, and comes more than nine months after the group's initial determination, which said Samsung infringed on four of Apple's patents across a handful of its mobile devices. Friday's ruling found Samsung guilty of infringing on two patents: one that covers … Read more
Best Buy is bringing back a recent promotion that can shave $200 off the cost of a new iPad.
Launched on Tuesday by the retail chain, the deal rewards consumers with a minimum $200 gift card for trading in a working iPad 2 or third-gen iPad. You can spend that $200 on any item at your local BB store or the retailer's Web site, according to Best Buy.
The retailer is encouraging consumers to use the gift card toward the purchase of a fourth-generation iPad. That gift card would cut the cost of the latest edition iPad with a … Read more
AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless have each introduced new "early upgrade" programs that allow wireless customers to trade in their smartphones as often as every six months. Are these plans really worth the cost? And which one offers the most value?
I try to answer these questions in this Ask Maggie.
As T-Mobile CEO John Legere said when he introduced his company's new Jump program, "Two years is too long to be locked into a phone. You should decide when you upgrade, not your wireless company."
Wireless consumers hungry for the latest and … Read more

Apple has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to stay a ban on sales of older iPhone and iPads while a court considers an appeal.
In a motion filed Monday with the quasi-judicial body, Apple argued that the ban set to go into effect August 5 would "sweep away an entire segment of Apple's product offerings," as well as harming its partner wireless carriers.
Apple is said to be plotting new incentives and schemes to persuade shoppers to buy the iPhone in-store.
Head honcho Tim Cook imparted some of the new measures -- which could include more price-matching and trade-in options -- at a chinwag with Apple's retail chiefs, 9to5Mac reports, citing "multiple people familiar with the internal event."
The move apparently comes in a bid to fight competition from Android smartphones. While Cook is supposedly happy with sales figures for Mac and iPad devices, he wants more customers to buy iPhones from inside Apple shops, so that they get a … Read more
