Zagat To Go: Find food while you hoof it

For 29 delicious years, the Zagat Survey (pronounced zuh-GAT) has been compiling restaurant ratings from user reviews all over the globe to help foodies and regular people find the perfect spot for a first date, romantic meal, or celebration. For considerably fewer years, it has made its renowned services available for mobile phones.

I reviewed the trial version of Zagat To Go (see all downloads) on a BlackBerry Curve (download) and Windows Mobile Palm Treo (download).

Zagat To Go for BlackBerry may have been custom-built for BlackBerry, but features a surprisingly basic home menu that's still stuck in the … Read more

Palm Treo 755p lands at Verizon--yawn

Sure, it's been available through Sprint for about eight months now, but hey, if you still want it, Verizon Wireless customers can now finally get their hands on the Palm Treo 755p. It replaces Verizon's aging Palm Treo 700p and aside from a new teal green color, there isn't much difference between the physical characteristics and core features of the Sprint version and the Verizon model. The Palm-based smartphone offers built-in support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology and Exchange ActiveSync; EV-DO; and Bluetooth 1.2. The Treo 755p is currently available online for $299.99 with a … Read more

Add voice dialing to your Treo or Centro

As much as I love my new Palm Centro smartphone, it's not terribly smart when it comes to voice dialing.

OK, it can't do it at all. Same goes for its Treo brethren. (All together now: Weak!)

At least there's third-party software to fill in the gap. VoiceIt Technologies' VoiceDialIt provides fairly seamless voice dialing for the Centro and Treo. And from now until December 31, you can snag it for $15.95 (normally $24.95).

The software employs a simple, attractive interface for adding voice-dial contacts, either manually or from your address book. I installed it … Read more

Palm releases Windows Mobile 6 update for Treo 750

In addition to the update, Palm also announced it has begun selling unlocked versions of the … Read more

Sound the alarms: Verizon actually releases Samsung SCH-i760

Yes, you read that right. After what seemed like ages (heck, this video shown here was taken way back at CES 2007), Verizon Wireless today officially announced the availability of the Samsung SCH-i760 smartphone.

A bigger, badder version of the Samsung BlackJack, this Windows Mobile 6 (Professional Edition) device adds a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with an external dial pad, a touch screen, and integrated Wi-Fi. If that weren't enough, it also serves up EV-DO, Verizon's V Cast services, Bluetooth with A2DP support, and a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Of course, all this goodness comes with a cost. The i760, … Read more

Palm Treo 500v launched in Singapore

First announced exactly a month ago, the Palm Treo 500v smartphone is now available in Asia, at least in Singapore. The 500v was launched in partnership with European carrier Vodafone in September and still bears that operator's brand name even though Palm has released it with M1 here.

Using Windows Mobile 6 standard, the 500v is Palm's first Treo without a touchscreen. It still has the same QWERTY keypad found in every one of its PDA-phones but sports different features from earlier Treos because it is targeted at the consumer market rather than businesses. One point that really … Read more

Treo developer leaves Palm

Something is bound to go right for Palm eventually. But when?

Recently the smart phone company swung and missed badly with its announcement and subsequent cancellation of its Foleo device. That's in addition to increased competition in the smart phone space with a slew of well-received devices from Apple, Nokia, Research In Motion, LG and Samsung. It all contributes to a public perception that the former font of mobile device innovation has dried up. Now comes news that a senior engineer that helped develop the Treo 700 and Treo 750 is making his exit.

Palm tucked the notice into … Read more

Palm announces Treo 500v for Vodafone Europe

As scheduled, Palm announced a new product today for our friends across the pond: the Palm Treo 500v. Available in charcoal gray or glacier white, the smart phone sports a new, slimmer design (4.3 inches high by 2.4 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep; 4.2 ounces) and runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition, which means, unlike past Treos, it won't have a touch screen (hmm, interesting). It offers 3G/UMTS support, Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, and 150MB of user-available memory with a microSD expansion slot. Other than the new look, there's really not much … Read more
