Flipboard is releasing a new app Thursday that will work on devices running Windows 8.1, including Microsoft's new Surface Pro 2.
The company designed the new app to take advantage of Windows 8's signature live tiles, and users can feature Flipboard as a live tile on their Windows Start screen. Zappos has released its Windows 8 shopping app just in time for the holidays. Though the app can be used on any system that runs Windows 8, it's tailor-made for the touch screen, which should benefit users with devices like the Microsoft Surface or the Dell Venue 8 Pro.

Windows Phone continues to eke out gains in a landscape dominated by Android and iOS.
During the third quarter, Microsoft's mobile OS share rose to 3.6 percent globally from 2.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, Gartner said in a report on Thursday. Shipments grew to 8.9 million from 3.9 million over the same period. Though Android's market share surged to more than 80 percent, Gartner dubbed Microsoft the winner of the quarter, with a gain in shipments of 123 percent.

The new Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker was released on Tuesday by IDC, which detailed third-quarter numbers for all smartphone shipments worldwide. A total of 261.1 million smartphones were shipped during this quarter, 81 percent of which run Google's operating system. A study by Strategy Analytics last month revealed nearly the same numbers, showing that Android gobbled 81.3 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter.
