MacBook Air battery dying within 2 hours--any advice?

Having fixed my previous problem of the MacBook Air not actually going to sleep I am now seeing battery life of no more than 2 hours. It also seems to take about 4 hours for the battery to charge up completely...very strange.

I am not in Safe Sleep mode instead running a custom "quick sleep" setting. My friend is running the MBA with "Better Battery" and is also seeing about 2 hours of battery life.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

Google offers YouTube video software for Macs

Google has released basic software called Vidnik that lets Mac OS X users record video with a Webcam or built-in camera, trim its length, add tags and a title, then upload it to YouTube.

The software also can be used to upload other videos to the company's video-sharing site, and other editing software can be used on the videos taken by Vidnik, David Phillip Oster of Google's Mac team said in a blog posting.

The software is among a host of Mac applications the company has produced. (Another interesting one is Visigami, which lets people search for images … Read more

Stolen Mac helps nab burglary suspects

A remote-desktop access feature found in some Macintoshes is being credited with leading police to two suspects in the burglary of an apartment in New York.

In addition to flat-screen TVs, iPods, and DVDs, the thieves made off with two laptops, one of which belonged to Kait Duplaga, an Apple store employee, according to a report in The New York Times on Saturday.

While police in White Plains, N.Y., were coming up empty with their investigation, Duplaga learned that her computer was being used on the Internet, and she turned on the Back to My Mac feature installed on … Read more

The Open Computing experiment begins

I'm writing this post on Psystar's Open Computer running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2.

The Open Computer arrived Wednesday, and I spent some time this morning setting it up. The plan for now is to use it as my main work system (at least while I'm in the office) for about a week and see how it goes. For a full review, check out what my CNET Reviews colleague Rich Brown had to say, but I've noticed a few tidbits in the early going.

For one, the fan is much, much quieter than I … Read more

Why Apple and Google are winning

I'm rereading Businessweek's excellent article, "The Mac in the Gray Flannel Suit," and it became very clear why Apple is succeeding in the enterprise despite not focusing on the enterprise.

Apple has made computing pleasant.

I love my Mac. I love its look and feel. I love the software. I actually look forward to using my Mac. It's not a Dell, dude. It has class.

Another (overused) way of saying this is that Apple has "consumerized" the computing experience. As it turns out, enterprises employ consumers. Lots of them.

But it's not just Apple.… Read more

Are the Hitslink gods crazy? The problem with data

When I checked Hitslink yesterday, it showed Apple's Mac jumping 52 percent. Now the number has retreated to a more reasonable number. People thought I was making up the Hitslink number - I wasn't. It's what I found when I visited the site, as captured in the graphic I show.

O'Reilly takes a stab at measuring Mac adoption. Undoubtedly, its data is flawed, too, as it admits.

Hitlink also had Firefox market share declining, though not by an unreasonable amount. Still, Mozilla says the Hitslink data is flawed.

The numbers don't lie...but they sure … Read more

Apple's market share explodes 52 percent in April...or does it?

Hitwise Hitslink reports a massive boom in Apple's Mac market share, rising 52 percent over March 2008 to reach 11.43 percent. This is in stark contrast to data reported by ZDNet, which showed a .47 percent drop in the Mac's market share.

What gives?

It's doubtful that Apple's numbers could jump 52 percent in one month. However, it's almost equally doubtful that Microsoft's stumbling Vista recouped any market share against the Mac, which has been on a tear.

Indeed, Gartner thinks the Mac is going to double its market share over the next … Read more

'Consumer Reports': Apple tech support is aces

Apple has the best technical support in the PC industry, according to the most recent issue of Consumer Reports.

The venerable magazine surveyed its readers to gather their experiences with technical support for personal computing, and Apple's organization far outpaced its rivals in the PC industry. Readers assigned the company a score of 83 for its notebook technical support, which translates to "very satisfied" on Consumer Reports' rating scale. You have to be a Consumer Reports subscriber if you want to access the articles and graphs on its Web site.

Another Mac clone maker spotted on eBay

Another entrepreneur is trying their hand at selling unsanctioned Mac OS X desktops.

AppleInsider spotted an eBay listing on Tuesday for a generic desktop tower running Mac OS X Leopard, weeks after Psystar made a very public show of defying Apple's licensing agreement for Leopard with its Open Computer. "Chris555" is selling the unbranded desktop for a fixed price of $549.99, plus $50 shipping and handling.

Is this the latest in a wave of Mac clone makers emboldened by Psystar? Apple has remained silent on the issue to this point, but lawyers think the company would have a good chanceRead more

Bona fide Intel monopoly: Ultraportables

The MacBook Air, IdeaPad U110, and ThinkPad X300 are the three hottest ultraportables out there. They all sport unique styling outside. And Intel blue inside.

Styling and design are now so crucial in notebooks that when a model arrives in pink the color change alone is news.

Ditto for the styling imperative for some of the sveltest, lightest, and most impressive of notebooks: the Air, X300, and just-released U110.

Scratch the surface (or lift up the keyboard in this case), however, and you'll find that their unique exteriors house similar Intel core electronics.

Does this have anything to do … Read more
