Ten months after its debut at CES 2007, the Alpine IVA-W205 is finally hitting the shelves and we got our hands on one for a full review in our CNET test car. In its most basic configuration, the IVA-W205 is an in-dash multimedia player with the ability to handle a range of audio-visual disc format (CDs, MP3- and WMA discs, DVD video and VCDs) plus a bunch of other media sources such as iPods, HD and satellite radio via add-on modules. The star feature of the system, however, is its ability to swallow Alpine's standalone portable Blackbird GPS device, … Read more
Though the Motorola W385 for Verizon Wireless isn't officially part of the Moto Krzr K1m family, there's no escaping that it is basically a repackaged--and slightly downscale--version of the earlier phone. It borrows the Krzr's slim shape while adding a few design touches of its own, and it offers a respectable feature set minus support for Verizon's EV-DO network. The result is a satisfying, functional phone with decent call quality. Read our W385 review for a full analysis or check out our slide show.
Less than a week after we reviewed the excellent Sony Ericsson W580i, AT&T has added the Walkman handset to its lineup. Available for a very reasonable $79 (normally $269), the W580i offers a sexy slider design and the usual high-end Walkman features, all of which deliver solid performance. Apparently, AT&T only offers the white version, which is a pity since we prefer the gray and black models.
AT&T also added the Sony Ericsson Z310a, which is low-end handset in a flip phone design. Its features are limited to a VGA camera, text messaging, and … Read more
Last week we told you that Sony Ericsson had just sent us three new shiny Walkman phones in a shiny box. Now that we've had the chance the review all three of the phones, we can report that on the whole we were pleased with what we saw, at least in the performance department. The W880i, W580i and W200a delivered satisfying call and music quality, albeit with a couple of quibbles here and there. Design, on the other hand, was a mixed bag. While the W580i and W200a succeeded, the W880i did not.
Our favorite phone of the bunch … Read more
It's been a while since I received any new cell phones from Sony Ericsson. So when the company called to tell me they were sending me not just one, but three new handsets from the last CTIA show I was very excited. But leave it to Sony Ericsson, which takes its handset design very seriously (and to great success) to make the packaging equally as exciting.
Doh! Palm has pulled its software updates for the Verizon WirelessTreo 700p and Treo 700w/700wx after numerous customer complaints about connectivity issues. A statement on Palm's Web site says the update was taken down "... as a result of increasing customer reports of network connectivity issues following the updates. We are currently investigating the issue and will re-post as soon as they become available. The reported error displays 'Error 3000 - Data network is not available' when attempting to connect to the data network. This error does not affect your device or personal data in any other … Read more
While the rest of the world is driving around listening to compressed music files on home-brewed MP3 discs and iPod tracks broadcast over FM, Sony is betting that there is a market for audiophiles who want a far richer in-car acoustic experience. The company this week released the XAV-W1, the first superaudio CD-compatible (SA-CD) in-car stereo, which is able to play the proprietary Sony format in 5.1-channel surround sound (if you have the right car speaker arrangement).
With a 7-inch LCD screen, the XAV-W1 is also the first in-dash DVD player from Sony, which has to date confined itself … Read more
At Denon's 2007 Line Show in Jersey City, NJ, we were introduced to two new networked docks that do more than just play your iPod. The ASD-3N and ASD-3W (same as the ASD-3N, with added wireless connectivity) allow you to play streaming data off your home network through any receiver or device that can take analog RCA audio.
Even more appealing, the docks ship with a newly implemented GUI that has the ability to display album art. This will make use of the S-video output on each of the docks--also allowing you to view videos stored on your iPod. … Read more
It's not the Windows Mobile 6 software upgrade that some of you may be pining for, but Palm has released updates for the Verizon Wireless Treo 700w and Treo 700wx smart phones. The updater for the 700w brings support for dial-up networking (DUN), the A2DP Bluetooth profile for stereo Bluetooth headsets, Today screen enhancements, new dialing preferences, and additional compatibility with Bluetooth car kits. Sadly, Treo 700wx owners don't get as many perks, but you do get A2DP support, DUN improvements, and more daylight saving time features. Both updates are available now for download from Palm's support Web site.… Read more
The World Wide Web Consortium, which purports to be an "open forum" for standards discussion, doesn't exactly live up to its own claims.
Earlier on Monday, the W3C barred one of my colleagues, News.com reporter Anne Broache, from attending a "Toward More Transparent Government" conference held, ironically, in a government building in Washington, D.C.
The conference Web site clearly says: "Conversations and results are public."
But Danny Weitzner, one of the W3C's policy directors and event co-chair, repeatedly claimed in a followup telephone conversation that, by "public," the … Read more
