E3 2007: 'John Woo Presents Stranglehold'

We've seen games based on movies and movies based on games, but less common is a game that serves as a sequel to a movie, bringing together the director and star for a reunion in the digital realm. Director John Woo and actor Chow Yun Fat have both contributed to this pseudo sequel to the 1990 international hit Hard Boiled, which itself inspired pretty much every game where a character leaps through the air with a blazing pistol in each hand.

Similar to games such as Max Payne, Stranglehold follows Chow Yun Fat's police inspector on the trail … Read more

E3: Commodore unveils its U.S. desktop lineup

We found out back in March that the Commodore name had been scooped up by a Netherlands-based company looking to reinvent the brand as a modern gaming PC. Now we get wind of the new lineup of PCs coming soon (this quarter) to the States, first via online sales, with an unnamed big-box retail presence following afterward.… Read more

E3 2007: 'BlackSite: Area 51'

It's not the most auspicious start to a game's marketing plan when the publisher tells you that it hopes to get some runoff sales from the 800lb. gorilla that is Halo 3. Still, it's not like there isn't room for another sci-fi-themed first-person shooter, but the Area 51 brand name has been squandered on a series of dated arcade light-gun games and forgettable console shooters over the years; clearly it's not going to pose much of a sales threat to Master Chief and company this September.

And yet, on maybe the second or third hands-on … Read more

E3: 'Silent Hill: Origins' trailer

I've played every Silent Hill game since 1999's original on the PlayStation, and if there's one thing I had always wanted, it was a portable version. Well, thanks to Konami, Silent Hill: Origins, exclusive to the PSP, will be released November 13. Origins is a prequel to the Silent Hill series in which you come into contact with characters from the later games.

E3: A first-timer's retrospective

My time here in Santa Monica is coming to a close, and I'm still not sure how I feel about my first E3 experience. I knew that it wasn't going to be as over-the-top as years past, but I guess its reputation was still built up in my mind.

Apparently, going smaller also means going more spread out. I don't think I went to a meeting or a shoot in the same location twice! From the Fairmont Hotel (valet parking was full, I had to double-park blocks away to pick up my registration pass) to the Barker … Read more

Assassin's Creed is due out in November for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

E3: 'Metroid Prime 3: Corruption' gameplay

Nintendo finally brings Metroid to the Wii with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Once again, gaming's favorite female bounty hunter Samus Aran must don her visor and arm blaster and save the galaxy. This time around, Samus gets a new suit of power armor with a hyper mode that could either help her or destroy her. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption ships August 27.

E3: 'Unreal Tournament III' trailer

Die-hard deathmatch fans have been waiting for a true Unreal Tournament sequel since UT2004 hit PCs more than three years ago. The lastest iteration will be exclusive to the PC and PS3 "in 2007" when it hits in November--wording that makes us think it's highly likely we'll see the game (or a reasonable facsimile) appearing on the 360 at some point next year. But no matter--PS3 owners will still relish the chance to get first dibs on the game, which is powered by the same Unreal Engine 3 graphics engine that made Gears of War such … Read more

E3: 'echochrome' trailer

It's no secret that casual games are making their presence felt in the era of next-gen gaming. echochrome is a puzzle game that resembles something out of an M.C. Escher painting. You must guide the main character (who looks like a wood-jointed mannequin) through increasingly complex environments filled with portals and hidden gaps. echochrome will be released on the PS3's PlayStation Network as well as the PSP.
