New Apple leader sets stage for the future of the iPod

Apple is ready to start a new chapter in the history of the iPod with a new leader for that group.

The company's selection of Mark Papermaster as the new head of iPod and iPhone hardware engineering points the way toward a more sophisticated future for Apple's mobile computers, as Apple has been hinting for over a year. The veteran chip and system designer will be tasked with overseeing the transformation of the iPod lineup from relatively simple music players to complex and powerful mobile devices, with the iPod Touch as the first example.

Using the iPhone to keep a 2.0 voter record in the first 2.0 election

After the California primary earlier this year where my touchscreen voting machine literally rebooted in mid-vote, this time around I was wondering what California and/or San Francisco election officials would do. Sure, my buggy e-voting machine did have a paper receipt behind glass next to the machine that looked to have captured my choices accurately, but the whole experience was not particularly reassuring. What about those folks in states that do NOT have a paper record next to the machine?

This election, with all the hype, all the California propositions that really matter, is one where an independent record … Read more

Analyst: Apple cutting iPhone production

Fresh off a blowout quarter for the iPhone, Apple may be cutting back on production of the device heading into what could be a slow holiday season.

Craig Berger of FBR Capital Markets said in a research note Monday that his research indicates Apple has cut back on orders for the iPhone 3G by as much as 40 percent during the fourth calendar quarter of the year, compared with Apple's order for the third quarter. Apple sold 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs during the third quarter, but it's not exactly clear how many it ordered, so there are … Read more

Shazam discovery of the day: Black Angels

I've blogged about it before, and there's nothing new to report, but let me say it again: if you're into music and you have an iPhone, you've got to download the free Shazam app.

My local cafe is a crowded collegiate place, but there's free Wi-Fi and they never kick you out as long as you order something, so sometimes I work there. I'm always able to identify the music that the young hipster staff's playing--Radiohead, Sigur Ros, your usual alt-ear candy--but today they've got some ugly psychedelic guitar noise going on … Read more

iPhone gaining ground with lower-income fans

Apple and AT&T's decision to subsidize the price of the iPhone 3G is paying off with an increase in sales to lower-income folks.

Comscore released data earlier this week indicating that while most iPhone users are in the $100,000-a-year income bracket, those earning between $25,000 a year and $75,000 a year are the fastest-growing segment of new iPhone customers. iPhone adoption among those making $25,000 to $50,000 a year has grown 48 percent since June, according to the report.

"Fastest-growing" is always one of my favorite research terms because it … Read more

Updated throughout at 4:55 p.m. PT with additional details and comment from IBM.

One of IBM's top chip executives has agreed to join Apple as a senior executive, but he might have to fight off his former employer first.

Mark Papermaster, until recently IBM's vice president of microprocessor technology development, plans to join Apple in early November in a position that will see him working closely with Apple CEO Steve Jobs in what IBM believes is an attempt to expand Apple's presence in the markets for servers and chips for handheld devices, according to the … Read more

iPhones not on House 'must-have' list

Reports of the iPhone's imminent arrival in Washington appear to have been greatly exaggerated.

Jordan Golson of the Industry Standard has debunked a report last week by TheHill.com suggesting that the U.S. House of Representatives was seriously considering switching its mobile computer of choice from the BlackBerry to the iPhone based on strong demand. Golson followed up with Jeff Ventura, director of communications for the Chief Administrative Officer of the House, and Ventura said that the CAO is merely testing a small number of iPhones to see how they might fit into the organization.

That's not … Read more

Software unlock for iPhone 3G coming soon?

An unlocked iPhone 3G is a little closer to becoming reality, according to the iPhone Dev Team.

Gizmodo picked up on a video produced by the iPhone Dev Team demonstrating that it has gained access to the baseband processor used by Apple in the iPhone 3G. The baseband chip is what controls the connection between the phone and the mobile phone network, meaning that a software download that could let you use your iPhone 3G on a carrier network other than the ones officially designated by Apple could be released soon.

I'm sure you remember the fuss about the original iPhone and those who sought to unlock itRead more
