iPhone 5 sales to hit 170 million over next year, predicts analyst

Out of 200 million iPhones sold over the next year, the iPhone 5 could account for 170 million of them.

At least, that's the number predicted by Asymco analyst Horace Dediu.

Generating one of his usual market analyses, Dediu is eyeing total iPhone sales of 200 million over the next 12 months. And based on past sales, the iPhone 5 will capture around 85 percent of those.

To arrive at his figures, the analyst quoted Apple's own marketing chief Phil Schiller. Testifying at the ongoing Apple v. Samsung trial, Schiller explained the company's iPhone sales projections as … Read more

New iPhone nano-SIM tray photos leaked

Translated by Google, tech lifestyle Web site nowhereelse.fr (via 9to5Mac) has posted photos of what appears to be the soon to be released iPhone's nano-SIM card tray. The photos come from China where many of the iPhone's parts are manufactured and assembled.

As you can see in the photos, the nano-SIM tray knocks a little off the micro SIM tray's width. In the world of mobile devices, especially ones that Apple produces, every bit of extra space counts.

Though Apple's design for the nano-SIM has been approved for use by ESTI, no official word has … Read more

iPhone 5 could sport tiny 8-pin dock connector, says report

Time to place your bets. Just how small will the iPhone 5's dock connector be?

A new report claims the next generation of iOS devices will come with an 8-pin connector. Citing two separate sources, the folks at iLounge say that Apple's next iPhone, iPad, and iPod units will dramatically shrink the size of the connector to a single 8-pin row from its current 30-pin layout.

This follows recent reports saying that the new connector would be whittled down to 19 pins. iLounge's sources believe that a 19-pin connector wouldn't jibe with the port's small … Read more

iPhone 5 production to hit 59 million this year, says analyst

Apple will be able to ramp up enough units of the iPhone 5 to at least satisfy sales estimates, according to J.P. Morgan's Mark Moskowitz.

In a report out today, the analyst said his firm expects Apple to announce the new iPhone in September and then follow up with a volume rollout in October. Despite concerns over supply constraints for the phone's display and casing, J.P. Morgan's Asia Tech team doesn't see any "major limitation or hurdle" standing in the way of a strong year-end push for the iPhone 5.

Even assuming … Read more

What will the next iPhone be called?

When Apple released the latest iPad earlier this year, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said that naming the device iPad 3 would have been so predictable. "We've had many products where we've never used numbers," Schiller said. "Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't."

Some people don't care what the next iPhone will be called, but some people do. If you're in the latter camp, the big question is whether Apple will follow the more predictable route and go with iPhone 5, the name just about everybody has been calling the upcoming device, or once again throw us a curve.… Read more

Apple reportedly to unveil iPhone 5, iPad Mini on Sept. 12

Apple consumers could perhaps see the debut of both the new iPhone and an iPad Mini come September.

Citing "sources who have proven accurate in the past," blog site iMore says that Apple will announce the two devices at a special event on Wednesday, September 12. The iPhone 5 itself would then go on sale 9 days later on Friday, September 21.

This latest report follows a tidbit last week from French site App4Phone.fr (English translation), which pointed to a September 21 release date based on intel from Chinese manufacturing sources. The spacing itself jibes with last … Read more

iPhone 5 leak? New pictures emerge

About a year ago at this time, iPhone 5 rumors and leaked photos were flying fast and furious. In fact, it was in early August 2011, that I speculated, "Is this what the iPhone 5 looks like? MacRumors says yes."

Of course, the answer turned out to be "no." Could we be looking at a similar disappointment this fall? Perhaps, but there's mounting evidence to support the imminent arrival of a new iPhone.

For example, a couple days ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at an upcoming iPhone 5 (or something). And today, Gizmodo showed … Read more

New iPod Touch could match taller size of new iPhone

The next iPod Touch may join the next iPhone is bumping up its screen size, according to new reports.

Citing its "Asian sources," Japanese blog site Macotakara claims that the fifth-generation iPod Touch will offer a four-inch LCD display, just like the upcoming new iPhone. But that's not all.

The next iPod Touch could be equipped with the same processor found on the iPhone 4S, say Macotakara's sources, which means an upgrade from the A4 to the A5 chip. Other specs may match that of the iPhone 4S as well. The next model will reportedly have … Read more

iPhone 5 leaked photos show tall white frame with center camera

Possible images of the next-generation iPhone continue to pop up online, with the latest allegedly revealing a peek at the front frame.

Two photos merged into one image posted by Taiwan-based blog Apple.pro display a white frame and the same white frame flipped over to reveal its back. 9to5Mac says the image is the first peek of a white front frame for the upcoming iPhone.

The width of the alleged frame is apparently the same as that of the iPhone 4S, according to Apple.pro, but the length is greater. That description follows several reports this year claiming that … Read more

Rumor: Apple to include quad-core A6 in next iPhone

Sources in the industry speaking with DigiTimes (via AppleInsider) have reportedly been expecting the competition in the smartphone world to heat up around the adoption of quad-core processors as early as this year's holiday quarter.

HTC, Samsung, LG, and China's Meizu already have quad-core processors in their phones, leading industry sources to believe that indeed, Apple will have to include a new chip to stay competitive.

That new iPhone is largely expected to be released this fall.

While its competition is mostly using Qualcomm's dual-core technology (quad-core is forthcoming later this year), Apple is expected to use … Read more
