iOS 4.3 hitting March 11

We previewed iOS 4.3 back in January, and now the time has almost come: the latest version of Apple's iOS software will be available March 11.

What's new this time around? Well, not as much as iOS 4.2, but there are some notable upgrades--especially if you're an iPad owner.

Support for additional multifinger multitouch gestures and swipes adds four-finger fast-swapping between open apps and a one-handed way to flick the app dock up, instead of double-clicking the home button. In fact, you'll probably be using that lone physical button a whole lot less now. … Read more

Rumored Valentine's Day release for Apple's iOS 4.3

A new rumor surfacing online pegs February 14 as the release date for Apple's iOS 4.3, the newest update for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.

MacStories has reported from a "reliable source" that iOS 4.3 will be available on February 14 at 10 a.m. PT.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber conjectured in his review of the Verizon iPhone that an iOS 4.3 release would make sense in the next two weeks. Verizon would have a launch and time to market its iPhone as the only one with the personal hot-spot feature (widely expected … Read more

A bit of a drag

We'll state up front that we are generally not very big fans of Windows desktop enhancements; too often they are clunky and buggy and end up slowing our system down instead of enhancing it. AeroSnap Plus aims to emulate the window dragging and resizing functionality of Windows 7 in other versions of Windows, and though it does work, we're afraid that it, too, falls victim to some of the problems that commonly plague applications of this type.

The program downloaded without issues and launched without installation. A six-tab menu appeared that was part options dialog and part Help … Read more

Do iOS icons confirm iPad 2 front-facing cam?

It's almost considered certain among fanboys that Apple's next iPad--which so far we're imaginatively calling the iPad 2--will come out in the next couple of months. It might be as early as April, as it was April of last year that saw the launch of the original iPad, which now has 87 percent of tablet market share.

Because the supposed unveiling is so close--some say within the next few weeks--the gossip mongers are in overdrive trying to find out what it will and won't have. And the latest rumor, which we spotted on Mac Rumors, … Read more

Rumor: No home button for iPad 2 and next iPhone?

Rumor has it that Steve Jobs didn't want any physical buttons on the original iPad. And, as we know, Steve Jobs tends to get what he wants--eventually anyway.

Which brings us to the latest Apple rumor. This one's courtesy of the Boy Genius Report, which got tipped off that the iPad 2, widely expected to be released in April, will lose its home button in favor of multitouch gestures that are already being incorporated into Apple's upcoming iOS 4.3 update.

The anonymous source told BGR that, "Apple, at some point in time, will remove the … Read more

Apple releases iOS 4.3 beta

Apple has released to developers a beta of iOS 4.3, the newest operating system update for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. iOS 4.3 will include several feature upgrades including the addition of personal Wi-Fi hot spots, new multitouch gestures for iPad, and customizable messaging alerts.

Also included in the first beta of iOS 4.3 is the return of orientation locking by using the hardware switch on the side of your iPad. Users will be able to toggle the usage of that switch from its current function, muting, to the new orientation lock.

The App Store app has … Read more

Rumor: iOS 4.3 to arrive Thursday, support subscription-based apps

Magazines and newspapers are migrating to iOS devices (most notably the iPad) at a steady clip, but there's one problem: publishers don't have a way to sell subscriptions--not yet, anyway.

That may change with the arrival of iOS 4.3, which is rumored to be arriving (or at least announced) as early as this Thursday, December 9.

As CNET's Joe Aimonetti reported last month, this build was already in the works when Apple rolled out iOS 4.2. And despite the latter's brief delay, it appears iOS 4.3 may still arrive on schedule (at least … Read more

Rumor: iOS 4.3 to hit in mid-December

Just as I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 this morning, MacStories reported that a "reliable source" claims iOS 4.3 will be available in mid-December, adding support for the Apple/News Corp. joint, iPad-only app, The Daily.

This source tells MacStories: "Apple was already planning to release a new build of iOS 4.x in mid-December. Most specifically, they were planning for an iOS 4.3 release on December 13th, which is a Monday."

The source claims that Apple had to push back the initial iOS 4.2 release because of Wi-Fi … Read more

Command your monitor

Display Changer from 12noon is a free display management utility that can change the height, width, color, and other aspects of your desktop via command-line switches. It can manage multiple monitor configurations, too. What may be its neatest trick is its ability to run an application in a different display resolution and return to normal resolution when the program ends. If you like to record and watch video on your PC, you can use it to temporarily configure your screen to display TV-quality video and return to a higher resolution when your player closes. You can also create shortcuts for … Read more

Setting the mapping bar

As far as mobile mapping goes, Google Maps for Android offers one of the best experiences you can get. The feature-fest, which Google has been building on for years, doesn't just tell you where you are using nothing but GPS or cell tower triangulation. It also tells you how to get where you want to go by car, public transport, good old-fashioned shoe leather, and now, by bike. Voice-guided navigation takes you turn by turn, and voice search keeps your typing fingers fresh.

A variety of add-ons layers information on top of the base map, so you can view … Read more
