CES: Share tot pics with Samsung BabyView monitor

LAS VEGAS--If your baby isn't getting enough attention at home, he or she can get more love on social-networking sites like Facebook with a new high-tech baby monitor from Samsung Techwin America that records images.

The company announced its BabyView at the Consumer Electronics Show here, touting the SD card recording of audio and video data for easy uploads to social networks.

With USB compatibility, the monitor can plug into a computer running Skype and act as Webcam, so friends anywhere on the Internet can check in on your child.

Various versions of the system have two-way talk, sound … Read more

Withings baby monitor smart enough for your phone

LAS VEGAS--New parents who skipped CES this year to stay at home with the little one, your timing was just a few months off.

Withings unveiled its Smart Baby Monitor at the show today, and says it expects the devices to start shipping in late March. (Pricing details are to be determined.)

The monitor, which looks like a cute, little-kid version of a spy gadget, is unlike traditional baby monitors in that it does not involve close-distance communication between devices. Rather, the high-resolution 3-megapixel camera with extra-wide lens (not to mention night vision with infrared LEDs and temperature and humidity … Read more

The end of Digital Noise

All albums eventually come to an end--even super-gonzo triple live CD sets--and the time has come for this blog to end as well.

I've had a great time exploring the intersection of music and technology for the last three-plus years. And even though the music industry is going through some wrenching changes, the public's interest in music has, if anything, gotten stronger.

I was at Coachella this April along with a record sold-out crowd of more than 90,000. Some of them were there for the party, but the musical lineup made the party happen. I've seen … Read more

Study: 92% of U.S. 2-year-olds have online record

There has been a lot of concern about young people posting too much information about themselves online, but a study commissioned by security company AVG found that 92 percent of U.S. children have some type of online presence by the time they are 2 years old. A third of U.S. mothers posted pictures of newborns, and 34 percent of U.S. moms said they had posted sonograms of their as-yet unborn child.

The study, conducted by Research Now, surveyed 2,200 mothers with young children in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia, New … Read more

Crave 16: Where my baby daddy? (podcast)

It may not be a creepy Kaspar baby, but the lead item on today's show is its very own brand of disturbing: a belly band that plays music to an unborn child. It's not the product that bothers Donald and Jasmine, though...it's the eerily happy mother and absentee dad. Also this week: a fan-tastic subwoofer, a new MP3 player that is not a phone, and some sweet street art in Portland, Ore., that Mario-loving cyclists are sure to appreciate. Plus, we get some viewer feedback and sort of drool over this week's heart attack-inducing foodstuff.

Baby got bass: Speakers for the unborn

Surrounding pregnant bellies with speakers isn't exactly new.

Earlier this year, I wrote about the Ritmo by Nuvo Group, an oddly named sound system through which unborn babies are subjected to the musical playlists of their supposedly fashionable mothers.

More recently, a new and improved fetus speaker system called Sound Beginnings hit the market, and while the idea of wrapping wombs in speakers may ring wrong to some, the company behind the device, Creative Baby, makes an interesting point: this is a surefire way for traveling or military partners to familiarize their unborn children with their voices.

The 404 632: Where we give them something to talk about (podcast)

All week long we've been discussing this year's Comic Con(vention) in California, an annual gathering where Conheads can buy, sell, and trade all manner of nerdly paraphernalia. It's also a good opportunity for companies to introduce new products, and our buddy Claire brought us back a bottle of SULU Pour Homme, the new fragrance from the folks at Genki Wear.

Designed for the man "wielding a rapier in a swordfight or commanding the helm of a Constitution-class starship," SULU is actually Genki's SIXTH Trek-inspired frangrance- past colognes include Tiberius, Red Shirt, Pon Farr for Women, … Read more

Drain bottles without a balancing act

When you wash baby bottles, towel-drying them isn't even an option. You have to precariously balance bottles all over your counter as you wait for them to dry--preferably upside down, so they'll drain. The Beaba Bottle Draining Rack makes the process easier, allowing you to set up to six bottles so that they can't be turned over or unbalanced. The rack will also hold up to six nipples, seals, and caps, so you've got all the pieces in one place. In fact, depending on how many bottles you have in rotation, it can make sense to … Read more

Feeding 2.0

You know how you can never find the spoon at the bottom of the diaper bag when the baby is screaming for food? Sure, maybe I could be a more organized mom, but I've seen my friends with the same frenzied look nearly every time I'm out and about.

I'd never heard of pouched baby food before this product turned up in my in-box, but apparently it's a popular alternative to jars. And Plum Organics has teamed up with Boon Inc. to create a spoon and pouch system. The custom-designed spoon easily attaches to the spout … Read more
