It's raining Treos, hallelujah

Well, I suppose not everyone is screaming hallelujah, but for all you Treo fanatics, here's the latest scoop on some upcoming models. It appears that both the Treo 750 and the Treo 680 have been given the green light by the FCC, which means that these GSM smart phones could end up at a certain carrier's (ahem, Cingular's, cough, cough) doorstep very soon. Cingular-bound Nokia N75 gets FCC blessing

Back in September, Nokia revamped its N series with some souped-up models, including the 5-megapixel, camera-equipped Nokia N95 and the musically talented Nokia N75 flip phone. However, our biggest fear about these drool-worthy gadgets was that they would suffer the same fate of their predecessors and lack the backing of a U.S. carrier. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't have an extra few hundred dollars lying around to purchase an unlocked N93. But it looks like that won't be the case with the N75. Today, the FCC approved the quad-band, UMTS smart phone … Read more

Cingular unveils the Motorola V365

A new Motorola phone appeared on Cingular's Web site today without a formal peep from either company. The Motorola V365 is a triband (GSM 850/900/1900) handset that also supports EDGE data speeds and Cingular's push-to-talk network.

Other features are midlevel and based largely on the phone's predecessor, the Motorola V360. Inside is a speakerphone, a VGA camera with video, Bluetooth, a digital music player, text and multimedia messaging, support for POP3 e-mail, voice dialing, and a wireless Web browser. The V365's flip phone design looks rather ordinary as Moto handsets go, but it offers … Read more

Treo 680 moves closer to launch

Treo lovers, ready your thumbs, as a release date for the new Treo 680 is now flying around the Web. When we first brought you the news of the low-cost Treo 680 earlier this month, we couldn't tell you much in the way of availability. But now it seems the device will go on sale November 5, and as we suspected, Cingular will be the carrier.

According to a Cingular advertisment posted on Mobility Today, the Treo 680 will cost $200 with service rebates. That might include an unlimited data plan as well, but we're not sure at … Read more

Samsung resurrects dual-hinged phone

As the saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed try, try again." Well it appears Samsung is following such advice to the letter. After the relatively lackluster performance last year of Cingular's Samsung SGH-D307, the Korean electronics giant seems to have gone back to the drawing board for dual-hinged devices. Photos of the upcoming Samsung U710 appeared on Howard Forums today with the promise that it's coming to a CDMA carrier near you. And if Howard Forums is correct that the phone's official designation is SCH-U710, then Verizon Wireless will be the lucky … Read more

Cingular helps the directionally challenged

Well, Cingular's just having a field day today. In addition to announcing the availability of the long-awaited HP iPaq hw6920, the cell phone carrier launched its first location-based service, called TeleNav GPS Navigator, for its business and government customers. The service costs $9.99 per month for unlimited use (or $5.99 per month for up to 10 trips) and provides text- and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions and color maps so that you don't miss that important client meeting. In addition to the standard nav features, there are some extra handy tools, including a Biz Finder for searching local … Read more

iPaq smart phone's coming-out party

This Halloween, Hewlett-Packard's latest handheld gadget is dressing up as a Cingular Wireless smart phone.

As long suspected, the iPAQ hw6920 series Mobile Messenger will make its U.S. debut on the Cingular network. That means full access to GSM/GPRS/EDGE goodness, plus other wireless fun, like Wi-Fi, GPS, infrared and Bluetooth.

The iPaq hw6925 is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel HP Photosmart camera for photo and video capture (the hw6920 does not), Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, and a built-in GPS feature that requires software downloaded from Cingular, Microsoft or HP.

The iPaq is available from Cingular'… Read more
