In the age of ubiquitous Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, it remains a minor scandal that home theater devices continue to heavily rely on ancient IR (infrared)-based remote controls. With no clear replacement standard in sight, companies tend to stick with IR in new products to maintain compatibility, with some network-connected gadgets getting Wi-Fi control apps or -- like Sony's notoriously IR-free PlayStation 3 -- going a Bluetooth-only route, and ending up needing kludgy adapters to work with existing universal remote controls.
The Logitech Harmony Smart Control ($130) is a fascinating new universal remote control system that attempts to bridge … Read more
Launchpad-Control for Mac adds a pane to your Mac's System Preferences, giving you control over which apps show up in Launchpad and what order they appear in, something that Apple neglected to bake into this new feature.
Installation of Launchpad-Control for Mac goes as easily as any other add-on control panel for System Preferences. We downloaded the file and launched it, and within seconds our new preferences pane was available. The pane is organized as an alphabetical list of all applications broken down into separate pages. It's a pretty intuitive interface and we immediately set to work, deselecting … Read more
A problem may occur in OS X where, when specific programs are launched, they may be placed outside the bounds of the current desktop area, resulting in the inability to interact with the program. If this happens, the program may be seen in Mission Control and Activity Monitor, but when Mission Control is deactivated the program slides off to the side of the display to again be hidden.
If this happens to your system, it could be because of a faulty window setting that occurred when using multiple displays with your system. So, as a first attempt to fix it … Read more

Android has no shortage of methods of accessing device settings from any screen, but that doesn't stop developers from getting … Read more

LOK-IT USB Storage Device Control successfully minimizes the chance of confidential data breach by locking out USB drives. The application quietly runs in the background and will disable any USB storage device when attached to your computer unless the device is on the application's white list.
Though the download checks in at about 2MB, setting it up may take a while. Upon startup, the program prompts you to make an account and sign in, but you don't have to if you're just looking to use the app on a local computer. LOK-IT USB Storage Device Control works … Read more
