A Mac Pro manufactured in the US? Color me unimpressed.
Apple CEO Tim Cook made some waves in December when he said the company would pour $100 million into a manufacturing facility in the US to manufacture some Macs. It was unclear until yesterday just which Mac would get the "Made In USA" treatment.
"It will happen in 2013," he said in an interview with Bloomberg back in December. "We're really proud of it. We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it's broader because we wanted to do something more substantial.&… Read more
The Moto X and its gorgeous display take Round 2 against the iPhone 5S.
A couple of weeks back, I wrote that the iPhone 5S bested the Moto X on physical design.
This week I'm writing about the display. Mostly because I'm wondering why Apple hasn't switched to AMOLED displays.
After using the X's AMOLED display for the last few weeks and comparing it with the 5S' LCD, I think it may be time for Apple to consider AMOLED, as the technology has improved a lot over the last 12 months or so.
The colors on … Read more
Google-owned Motorola Mobility is trying to lure iPhone users over to the Moto X.
A new tool on Motorola's Moto Maker site, the Web store for customizing and purchasing Moto X phones, lets users migrate contact and calendar information from an Apple iCloud account to a Google account.
The steps appear pretty straightforward, according to a help page on the migration tool. After purchasing a Moto X from the Moto Maker site, users enter their iCloud credentials, log in to their Google account, and click a few "Begin Transfer" prompts to migrate over their contacts and calendar … Read more
The Moto X display exhibits the best power efficiency and beats Apple's iPhone 5S, according to two recent research notes from ABI Research.
One, released Tuesday, trumpeted the display, supplementing a note released last week.
"After Google acquired Motorola, we now have the first Google-influenced phone with some very innovative engineering," Jim Mielke, VP of engineering at ABI Research, said in a phone interview.
Today's note said that the Moto X may be leading the way toward displays that don't have to constantly dim to save power. The display found in the Moto X...has … Read more
Both phones were first unveiled in August to hype and positive reviews, with at least one reporter traversing a continent and back in a day to get his hands on the Moto X.
But the price of Motorola's first phone fully conceived as a Google company started to fall just a few weeks after its release, and now Amazon has taken the cost (with a new two-year contract or upgrade on AT&T or Verizon) all the way down to $99.… Read more
Smartphones are the Swiss Army Knives of the tech world.
They're cell phones, music and video players, mobile Web browsers, and personal organizers, among other things. Not surprisingly, all this can take a toll on battery life, and when you depend on your smartphone for so much, the last thing you want is for it to run out of juice when you need it most.
Generally speaking, with moderate use, smartphones can give you a full day's performance before needing to be recharged, but not all gadgets are created equal -- some simply run out of steam early, whereas others will hang in there for the long haul.
Below, you'll find six smartphones (in no particular order) with battery usage that really impressed us, whether it was because they scored well in our lab tests for battery drainage, or simply because their usage time stood out from the crowd of humdrum cell phone batteries we encountered (and believe us, we encounter a lot). Give one of these devices a try if you're looking for a phone that packs some decent juice.Editors' note: This post was originally published October 31, 2011, and is updated frequently.… Read more
It's not easy to design a good-looking phone. A quick comparison between the iPhone 5S and Moto X shows why.
While beauty is subjective, some designs are clearly better than others. The HTC One is gorgeous by most accounts, including CNET Reviews' take.
And the Samsung Galaxy S4 is obviously a looker for many.
The Moto X -- which I recently picked up from Verizon -- is another decent design; CNET Reviews calls it "well-crafted."
I wouldn't disagree with that assessment. But an iPhone it is not.
Again, I'm talking about industrial design, not features. … Read more
Google's vice president of product management at Motorola Mobility Punit Soni announced on his Google+ page on Monday that the sought-after versions of the phone are once again available.
"We should have enough in stock now for what has been an unprecedented demand," Soni wrote.
Two developer editions of the smartphone are available -- a GSM version that works on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US and doesn't have … Read more
