Siemens to open Colo. wind turbine R&D center

Siemens Energy plans to open its first U.S. wind turbine research and development facility in Boulder, Colo.

The energy sector of the German company made the announcement on Tuesday in Houston, Texas, at Windpower 2008, the American Wind Energy Association's annual conference.

The center will concentrate on everything from designing better wind turbine components such as aerodynamic blades to conducting atmospheric-science research.

As part of the plan, Siemens Energy will collaborate with the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) to install a Siemens 2.3-megawatt (MW) wind turbine at the National Wind Technology Center located just outside of Boulder.… Read more

At last, a place to store your chardonnay and your hot dogs

When planning a dinner party, the most important part is deciding what to do with the leftovers. While it would seem sensible to just throw them out or give them to the dog, Siemens wants you to enjoy them just as much as the first bite. Its latest line of avant-garde refrigerators and freezers will do just that. The refrigerator features the Quickcool and Quickfreeze technology that, with the push of a button, temporarily maximizes cooling to stabilize the temperature and keep those hot pans from spoiling anything that happens to be close by.

Nokia Siemens speeds up 2.5G cell networks

Wireless equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks said Thursday that it has new software that will more than double the download speed on networks using 2.5G EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Environment) wireless technology.

This is good news for first generation iPhone users whose phones connect to the mobile Net via AT&T's EDGE network. On average iPhone users report that they can get download speeds of 210 kbps. Nokia Siemens says that with a simple software upgrade to the EDGE network equipment, operators, like AT&T, can offer their customers download speeds of 592 kilobits per … Read more

Siemens wins the $2 billion corporate bribery prize

And you thought Microsoft's alleged misconduct in Nigeria was bad. It's apparently nothing compared. to Siemens' reported global bribery, including in Nigeria. Between 2000 and 2006 Siemens engaged in nearly $2 billion in "suspicious transactions":

Scandal-scarred Siemens AG paid millions of euros in bribes to cabinet ministers and dozens of other officials in Nigeria, Russia and Libya as it sought to win lucrative contracts for telecommunications equipment, according to a court ruling that depicts a pattern of bribery by one manager....… Read more

Ultra-green LCD works with solar panels

Fujitsu Siemens may not be a brand typically associated with LCD monitors, and its latest project is equally unusual. The companies have developed a prototype 22-inch LCD monitor that incorporates solar panels working with a capacitor and special relay to cut power usage when on standby.

In fact, according to Personal Computer World, it can operate in zero consumption mode for five days on standby and, when active, sips just 0.6-0.9W of electricity. That certainly wouldn't do much pocketbook damage when the utility bills arrive. Word is the company's also looking to use its green tech … Read more

Intel and Nokia partner on WiMax

Intel and Nokia said Wednesday that they're working closely together to get WiMax-enabled devices on the market in 2008 when Sprint Nextel plans to launch parts of its new WiMax network.

The companies announced at the WiMax World Tradeshow in Chicago that they'd work together to ensure interoperability between Intel's WiMax chips and Nokia's laptop devices. Intel will also work with Nokia Siemens Networks to ensure interoperability between Intel's chips and Nokia Siemens' networking gear.

Intel and Nokia are both strong proponents of WiMax, a wireless technology that provides faster speeds than cellular technology, but … Read more

Siemens offers battle-hardened land line

The humble land line is finally getting some love. Not only can the home phone now have its very own ringtones, but at least some models are getting updated for the 21st century--and that means they've got to toughen up to survive, especially in today's unforgiving domestic conditions.

To that end, Siemens says its new "Gigaset E455 SIM" is dust-proof, splash-proof and "comes equipped with rubber pads for shock protection, meaning you also no longer need to worry about dropping and smashing it," according to Pocket-lint.

All that may be true, but we hope … Read more

A wireless home for family harmony

My mother would hate the way I just shove the tangle of wires behind my TV. It's the analog equivalent of sweeping dust under the rug.

The people at Tzero Technologies haven't met my mom (so far as I know), but they apparently understand her concerns. So they just moved a step closer to making good on their promise of wireless high-definition home entertainment.

The ultra wideband (UWB) chipset maker announced today that Siemens will be the first to incorporate Tzero's chips in its Ultra Wideband Multimedia Home Router. Tzero says the router, which will distribute Ethernet … Read more

A Porsche that makes breakfast

A lot of over-designed household appliances we've seen are just silly, but the toaster is one that deserves royal treatment. Why? Because toasters have been an icon of the personal computer since its Dark Ages, as far back as the 1980s. Yet the brick-and-mortar version of this domestic staple has been largely neglected.

Finally, though, someone has come to the rescue of the lowly appliance, and it's truly a knight in shining armor: Porsche. The brushed-aluminum, quartz-heated toaster--manufactured by Siemens with a Porsche design--looks as good as a Carrera, with an appropriate sticker price of $224, according to … Read more
