Relaxed rules for U.S.-China tech dealings spark controversy

WASHINGTON--The Bush administration sought to deflect criticism Wednesday over a new policy that clears hurdles for certain companies in China to receive exports of American-made multigigaflop computers, lasers, and other "sensitive" technologies with potential military uses.

Under rules that took effect last summer, some companies in China are--or will be--permitted to bypass normal legal procedures for receiving exports of certain restricted hardware and software from the United States. That list includes certain chemicals that could be used to build weapons, telecommunications equipment designed to operate at very high and very low temperatures, and computers with processor performance speeds &… Read more

'Zeemote': A game-changer for phones?

Move over, Wiimote. Now there's the Zeemote.

Games on phones have always been a tricky proposition because of obvious space constraints, both in display and navigation. But Zeetoo hopes to solve at least part of the problem with a 3.7-inch-long, 1.7-ounce wireless joystick, which it says will change the whole experience while still small enough for both hand and pocket.

Slashphone says the company has announced the launch of its much-anticipated "Zeemote JS1," though it remains unclear exactly what that means. The company's site says only that the controller is coming soon and that … Read more

Whip up a hot sandwich behind the wheel

If you ever visit a nutritionist or personal trainer, eventually the conversation will turn to "portion control"--a euphemism for "don't eat so much, you pig." And that concept is especially important to one of the most insidious diet busters of all, the car snack.

Here's one way to find out if you fit this category: Do you keep a portable microwave on the passenger seat? For those who do, there's a new way to downsize those mobile meals.

Gadgetizer says the "Road Pro 12 Volt Sandwich Maker" will whip up … Read more

Seize control of iTunes

For many Windows users, Apple's iTunes is a mixed bag. It offers many of the music and video jukebox services we all want, but it's often sluggish and the polar opposite of customizable. A new freeware plug-in called iTunes Control gives us all a chance to remedy at least part of that situation.

Combo mouse-game controller for Lilliputians

The dubiously named Genius brand occasionally hits upon a good idea like its Bluetooth headphones with touch-sensitive controls, but it always seems to lapse back into its penchant for uselessness with something like a hybrid speaker-camera. Its latest entry, unfortunately, comes closer to the latter category.

Evergreen is distributing the "Genius Navigator 365" mouse, which is really a clamshell that opens up to reveal a tiny game controller, according to Engadget. It almost looks as if Genius had a few spare VoIP phone-mouse cases lying around and didn't want them going to waste.

PS3 parental controls? Not so easy

On Tuesday, I wrote about the misinformation surrounding Mass Effect, a highly rated Xbox 360 game. I pointed out that, even if the game contained the obscenities various news outlets have falsely claimed it to have, parents can easily restrict their children from playing it on their Xbox 360. It's a simple matter of entering the "Family Settings" menu on the Xbox 360 dashboard, making up a passcode your kids won't find out, and setting the level of the games you want them to play. Keep it set to EC or E if you have young … Read more

When TV is more important than time

If you find yourself even vaguely interested in this multimedia remote watch, there may be some 12-step programs to consider. What's even more disturbing is that it's not the only one of its kind on the market.

Unlike the previous touch-screen version, this one apparently doesn't need a stylus because it has buttons more like a full-size remote, which can work up to 5.5 yards away, according to GeekAlerts. But we still don't know why any sane person would need to keep a remote attached to the body at all times, unless tthere's a … Read more
